Today is Thursday and I’ve just entered the classroom everyone is very excited to see me again. Today there is going to be a strange schedule because of awards day. The students are getting into groups right now to continue working on what they started yesterday. Today a lot of class time has been taken up because the students got a chance to go get breakfast since they won’t get that chance later, because of the changed schedule. Today they’re objective is author’s craft, which is very weird because doing my lesson plans the other day I did them on author’s craft. They are using types of authors craft and they have to explain how Edgar Allen Poe creates suspense using author’s craft. Today I walked around and help a little bit, but it’s been so long since I’ve been in eighth grade I need a little help from them to remember all of this.
Today was my very first day of placement and I enjoyed it a lot. I’m doing my placement at the middle school in Mrs. Ingram’s seventh grade Social Studies class. Since this wasn’t the first day I had actually been in the classroom and discussed some things with Mrs. Ingram I knew a good bit of what they were doing and why. As soon as 7:45 rolled around all of the students were flooding the hallways trying to get to their lockers and then to class. When the students walked in they seemed excited to see me again; a lot of them waved and even remembered my name and said hey. The one part of my day that I think I liked the most is when a girl who was a cheerleader approached me and wanted to know about the intensity of high school sports. She decided to talk to me because she wanted some insight on high school sports because she wants to be a cheerleader when she gets to high school. I thought it was sweet that the little girl was looking up to me and I explained to her that she shouldn’t worry because once she got to high school she would be provided with all the help she needed. It was time for class to start and as soon as Mrs. Ingram began speaking all of the students became silent; I was amazed at the respect they have for her because I don’t see the same type of response in my high school classes. Mrs. Ingram started the lesson off with CNN Student News; the students had to watch and fill out a worksheet that would later be worth a grade. During the news show some of the students laughed at the accents of the foreign reporters and Mrs. Ingram explained to them that they shouldn’t laugh just because they sound different than we do. She tried to further explain this by telling them if those people were to hear us talk they would think we sounded funny too. This stood out to me because some teachers would have reacted more strongly, but instead she tried to nicely explain that what they were doing was not nice. After the news Mrs. Ingram began helping them make a study tool for their test which I thought was very thoughtful of her because not all teachers take the time to do this. She explained to me on Monday that the reason she did this was because she didn’t believe all of her students would take the time to study so she decided to help them out a little. The class then transitioned into a new lesson and I handed out the notes that the students would have to fill out as Mrs. Ingram lectured. The notes she created had the majority of the information already there for them, but she left blanks where the most vital information was for them to fill out. She explained that the reason she did this was so the notes were organized in a neat manner for them to study and also to reduce their time taking the notes and allow them more time to actively listen to her lecture. Because of the different scheduling I was able to stay for a short time in her second period class and I witnessed the repetitiveness she has to endure every day. Because she teaches the same thing to each class she has to run through the same lesson five times a day, it has to get boring but I’m sure she knows her history!
Today is Thursday November 8, 2012, and today is also the first time I was in my classroom. I am helping Mrs. McCaskill at Mount Pisgah Elementary school in the library. Today when I got there Mrs. McCaskill and I talked about the packet Mrs. Sutusky gave me to give her. Then we were supposed to have the first grade come for class but Mrs. Joyner never showed but instead of observing today I helped Mrs. McCaskill. She let me put up the number books up while she put up the picture books. We talked about random stuff while we did that. Then we were putting up a new bulletin board up outside in the hallway, because they have to have a new one every month. While I was helping Mrs. McCaskill with that time slipped away and it was time to go. I have a blast, I can’t wait for tomorrow!
It was my first day of placement yesterday! I walked into the class sat down in my chair and waited for the kids and my teacher to get there. It was a strenuous wait, everything seemed to be drawn out and ill admit i was a little bit nervous. When class started we got right to it. The teacher gave a tiny speech about something that had happened to the kids project and i stood to listen to that. After that the kids got right to work. They were instructed to pull out their weather chart that they had been working on all week. Today was the day they finished it up and graphed the results. There were a few complications that i noticed like some students not doing their work or some students not having their work but in the end a solution was given out to all and they proceeded as planned. Will they were working i walked around the classroom observing and on occasion helping the kids as much as i possibly could. After they were done the students turn in the work to Mrs. Lesher and i got them laptops so they could play some games for the last ten mins. After the tens mins were up they proceeded to the awards ceremony that they had and i help with the final part of putting the laptops up. Over all it was a good day.
Yesterday was the first day officially in my placement. When I got to Midway I was beyond excited, and actually was not nervous at all. Beings I had already spent a day with the class I was already beginning to bond with the students. I knew most of them by name except for a few here and there. Yesterday they began their testing for SEAGUL and it will last until Tuesday of next week. Beings there was not much I could do because of the testing Mrs. Hayes assigned me some work. She handed me two sets of papers so I could grade them for her. Once I graded all the papers I went back through and added up the numbers wrong and wrote them at the top of the paper. I went ahead and did that so it would be easier for Mrs. Hayes to put their grade straight into the grade book. The test that the kids were working on took longer than planned. Without disrupting the students I signed out with Mrs. Hayes, and in the main office. Even though there was not a lot going on it was still a good day. I am extremely excited about the weeks to come, and can’t wait to actually teach the class a lesson.
Yesterday was the first day in my placement. I’m helping Mrs. Sowell out at Baron DeKalb. When I got there the kids were still at breakfast, so Mrs. Sowell and I went over all of the information that Mrs. Sutusky gave us in the folder. I was curious about how the classroom behavior would be because Monday Mrs. Sowell’s daughter was sick so she stayed home to look after her, and had to call a substitute in. While Mrs. Sowell was out the students were being loud and hardheaded. Now that their teacher was back, when the students got to the classroom they knew what they were supposed to be doing and that they were not allowed to talk. The students started their morning off with reading books and taking AR Test on them. Each student has a goal to meet at the end of the week. Some students couldn’t find their book on the computer so I went around helping the ones that needed help. After about 20-25 minutes of reading and taking AR Test Mrs. Sowell allowed some of the students to go to the library to return or get new books. When all of the students got back in the classroom and in their seats they began to work on their “Writers Workshop.” While they were working on their writings I walked around the room to assist anybody that needed help. Some of the students needed help spelling a word or coming up with catchy titles. Each of them had different topics to write about. I can’t wait until they publish their books so that I’ll be able to read the final story. I think that being in Mrs. Sowells class will be a great field experience. I look foward to seeing her along with each and everyone of my students each and every morning.
Today was my first day with the children in third grade at Mt. Pisgah Elementary and they are such good children. The teacher Mrs. Mason is a great teacher and she has many different ways that she uses to teach with the children. Today, when I got there the children started to read and take AR test first for about twenty minutes. I helped a child named Bronson read a book and helped him with words that he did not know how to say. He made a 100% on his book and then we looked for another book. After the children got done with reading Mrs. Mason read a play and then teached them how to find the setting and scene. I had a cup with each child’s number on it and I pulled it out when Mrs. Mason wanted me to pick someone to read. While they were reading I was making sure everybody was following along and pay attention. After we got done with reading together then the children went to their desk and got out there daily work which they do every day but Fridays.
I know I'm a day late but they say "better late than never." Yesterday, Thursday, was my first day in placement and Mt. Pisgah in second grade. My kiddies are doing testing and I'm not allowed to be in there so I was put in Mrs. Newman’s fourth grade. She wasn’t there Thursday so I helped the substitute with the kids “Morning Work” paper. One of the questions asked about a ratio between six girls and eight boys. Mrs. Young, the sub asked the kids if they knew what the answer was and most of them wanted to add the two numbers together. Some of the other kids yelled out that they didn’t know what ratio meant so Mrs. Young turned to me and asked what I though the answer was. I knew all along what the answer was so I told her six to eight. The kids automatically said, “How do you write that?” or “What does that mean?” So Mrs. Young asked me to explain how to write it. I turned to the board and began to write 6:8 and explain why it wasn’t 8:6. I didn’t know that fourth graders had to know that kind of math. It honestly took me a minute or so to think about some of their math problems on their worksheet. After their “Morning Worksheet” it was time for them to go to their related arts, which was the computer lab with Mrs. Stevens. While they were in the computer lab they worked on A+ which is something I thought only high school students had to do but it is for all ages. I didn’t get to go back to their class because I had to leave Mt. Pisgah and go back to the high school. I did go peak into my second grade class and tell them bye. One of my kids, Cameron, asked me if I was coming back and I told him every day until Christmas! Leaving is my least favorite part of the day, but I know that there is always tomorrow.
Today in my placement Mrs. Joyner introduced me to the class and told everyone where I worked. Some of the kids said they have seen me at work before but I do not really remember seeing them. At the beginning of class Mrs. Joyner made me pass out the folders so I could learn all the students’ names. The students expected me to play recess with them again but I could not because I had to leave to go back to school. I also had to give out papers to them and I got to help them when they needed it. Most of the students did not need help but some did. My first day was a great experience and I am ready to spend more time with my students. They all have begun to like me. We also got into groups and read the story that they have a test on Friday. I had to help a few read but most knew how.
Thursday was my first day of placement. I walked in and Mr. Leininger greeted me and I showed him all my stuff and explained the whole situation. He announced me as his teacher cadet and told everyone who I was. They loved the fact that my last name was Love. The class took down facts which is a daily routine. The facts are on all the standards throughout the SC History class and they are given a test on these. They then took notes on the Pre-Revolutionary War era. They then watched "The Patriot" until class ended. The class ended pretty early and there was an awards ceremony for the students at 9:00 that morning. I stayed and talked to Mr. Leininger about things I should look forward to and just help on anything.
Today was the first day of our placements. Mrs. Farnum welcomed me in along with the students. First they came into class and did their journals, got out folders, and sharpened pencils. While that was going on I got my first assingment, to work on "popcorn" words with the students who haven't gotten all the way through them. These are sight words they should know without thinking about them, once the entire class gets done, they will have a popcorn party. I got to help them with accelerated math also. When I was getting ready to leave they were going to take a trip to the library.
Today is Thursday, I went to my placement and I met the class and interacted with the kids. I got the privilege to teach my own group on the first day, I was so happy. I showed the kids how to label the American flag. I taught them how to draw a star and cut out the flag pieces. I let them color and trace the different parts of the flags. I got all the parts of the flag together and put them in order. I stapled the parts together and let them turn it in. In my second group I taught the kids how to draw upper case and lower case Ss and Ts. I had them color the ones that started with T and the ones that start with S. we did all the working our group time we got all of it done.
