It is Tuesday November 13, 2012 and my fourth day at Midway Elementary School. Today I got to the school and signed in as usual. Once I signed in at the front office I signed in with Mrs. Hayes. After a few minutes of talking to Mrs. Hayes she sent me to check on a few students. She had sent them to get the computer cart, and they had not returned yet. When I was going to find them they were already on their way back. Once they got the cart in the room, the other students were coming in. I took the usual breakfast and lunch count for the day. Once the bell rang the students watched the morning news show. After the news show went off the students did their morning exercise video. The video only lasted about two minutes. After the students finished their video they put their things away and wrote a story in their journals. After a few minutes of writing they cleared their desk and got ready for the last part of their testing. Today they took the math portion of the test. While they were testing I sat at Mrs. Hayes’s desk and made flash cards. After I made flash cards she asked me to cut out laminated buses and cars. I did not have enough time in the class to finish cutting them out so I brought the ones I had left with me. Once I left the class I signed out and headed to North Central.
Today class started off as it usually would with the reading and the kids taking AR Test. Mrs. Sowell sent on a scavenger hunt for a “Requested Fund” paper. A requested fund paper is for teacher who need money and in order for them to get the money they need they have to fill out the form and turn in to the PTO Department. I had to make another trip to the teachers’ lounge to run off copies for the writing prompt today. Today the writing prompt was, “Something you have learned how to do this year?” While they were writing some students got up to go get a thesaurus or either a dictionary. One boy got up to get a dictionary he was tall enough and could reach the book on the top shelf, when a smaller kid came to get his book the taller guy looked down at him, laughed, and walked off. This made me sad to see how kids that age are so mean to each other. I got up out of my seat and grabbed the book for the little boy; he was so polite and said thank you. While they were finishing up on their writing Mrs. Sowell and I talked a little about the lessons that I will be teaching the first and second week in December. For now the lessons that I will be teaching are reflecting on the book called, “The best Christmas pageant ever” I can’t wait until I get to teach the kids and have a fun activity to go along with it, to get them involved. After we finished discussing my lessons, she asked the students to come to a stopping point so that they could move on to the next activity. From the sound of it the kids didn’t want to stop writing. Tomorrow they will be taking the real test; they should do pretty good because they have been practicing for the last two days. After they came to a stopping point they continued reading and taking AR Test while they took turns going to the library to either check out books or to return them. I know tomorrow will be pretty much a laid back day because of the testing but I can’t wait to see each and every one of their beautiful faces.
Today is Tuesday and it’s my second week in Mrs. Kahler’s room, and I love being in there it’s feels like I’m a teacher. I love getting to go around and help everyone. Today we went over vocabulary words that had to do with phobias. Mrs. Kahler gave me a worksheet and I filled it out along with the students so in the future if they ask me about the words I will know what they mean and I will have the opportunity to answer each question. Today they also did words that end with an e, but they had to add -ing to the word. Mrs. Kahler said she has been noticing they spelled moving like moveing and that worried her, so for a warm-up they do a few words for practice. Practice only makes you better. Writing down definitions pretty much took up most of the time, but at the end of class they had the choice to start on their Edgar Allan Poe homework or they could start drawing a really scary eye, because in Tell Tale Heart the old man’s eye is what drove him crazy. They are so excited about drawing the eye. I’m also really excited to see how creative they are and what they are capable of coming up with.
Today everyone was pretty calm and laid back. One of the girls I've been working on popcorn words with came in class all excited to see me this morning because she knew all the rest of them because she'd studied the notecards we'd made. She did! She completely finished that sheet and that was the last of her sheets so she got to get something out the treasure box. One step closer to that popcorn party! It made me feel good that I'd helped her finish her words and that she was so excited to show me that she knew them when she came in this morning. They had a timed addition test to start the day after journals, you get 2 minutes to get though the problems but the majority of the class has passed the 2 minute test and have one minute now. Afterwards I helped with accelerated math again, I got to help with that A LOT today. Mrs. Sutusky was right, you really do form bonds with the kids, its gonna be hard to leave them.
Today was a fun day to be in Mr. Leshers sixth grade science class. For the acting class members it was activity day on potential and kinetic energy. We started the class of good with lots of smiles and great attitudes walking in the door, that’s always a good thing, then when things got settled down the students pulled out plenty of cans for the middle school canned food drive. My class now has I think the number was 94 cans. Even though I wasn’t a part of the drive myself I still think that it’s great that the homeroom is doing so much to help out the school and the community members. Another big thing for me happened today during my placement, I was given a sixth grade science standard book. Even though all of this information is available online I still felt great pride in reciving this because Mr. Lesher had taken her time out to get me one of these books so I could be that much more intuned with the class and all its activities. When the class got settled down we began working, they first did a worksheet that took them all of about ten minutes and then they watched a video on the different types of energy. Although the video was completely boring I felt as if it was a really informative video and that the students got a lot out of it. After the video was over the teacher and I passed out little toys to help demonstrate the uses of energy and how energy is converted. I helped oversee a lot of the activity. The class ended with me passing out homework and then the class was over and I proceeded to leave, ecstatic for tomorrow.
Monday, was a great day compared to today. I went to my class and stood while the kids were unpacking. Mrs. Catoe then told them to either finish their Veterans letter or start on a Thanksgiving crossword puzzle. Right off the bat, Cameron said “I need help!” sometimes, I thing that is his favorite thing to say. I walked over to his desk and asked him what he needed help on. He pointed to a word and told me that he couldn’t find it, so I showed him where the first letter was and told him which way to follow the letter until he got to the last letter of that word. Before I could walk away, he said again that he needed help. This time he pointed to another word. We did the same thing for about a minute when I finally realized what he was doing, which was trying to get me to give him answers. I told him that he was a big boy and he knew how to do it by himself. He wanted to whine a little bit but I wouldn’t give in (even though it was hard). When my second graders had to leave for testing, I walked them down the hall and they went to fourth grade. When I walked in some students were out of their chair and Mrs. Newman had to tell them numerous times to sit down or be quiet. I could tell right off the bat that today was going to be interesting. The fourth grade did their morning work like usual and then they put it in the box. Mrs. Newman then started going over their vocabulary words; the kids still wouldn’t be quiet. After they read the words out of the book, they had to match them on the board to the correct sentence. Time ran out and they had to go to Music, the related arts for today. When they walked in the music room, they went wild. Screaming and yelling across the room and not doing a thing they were told to do. The teacher tried to talk about their Christmas play but the kids wouldn’t listen so he put in the musical CD. The kids wanted to get up and dance around like monkeys and it was starting to get on my nerves that they were not behaving. The teacher couldn’t do anything with them so I had to step in and call some of the boys down. When I was my time to leave, I was kind of glad that I was getting out of the noise but I wanted to go back to my second graders. Let’s all hope tomorrow goes better than today.
Since today the students did not have Our Time Together (OTT) in the gym, the class began with the morning news show that is produced by the students. Once the news was over the class watched their normal CNN Student news except today Mrs. Ingram had to stop the news show to deal with behavior issues again. All of the students are supposed to be completing an assignment while the news segment runs, therefore they know no to talk and interrupt their classmates’ learning, but some students did. I’m actually glad the class is required to watch the news because it covers worldwide news and I’m able to keep up with things and learn to. The class then moved into one last review activity where they had to participate and discuss what happened in the section they just covered. I was shocked by the amount of participation from the class and how well they answered the questions; this is something I’m not used to in high school.
Today as soon as I got in to the classroom I was waiting for the children to come in from breakfast. After the students got in and picked what they wanted for lunch they started to read. Today there were I few children that wanted to read to me and I let them. The first student that wanted to read to me was a little boy, Branson and he always wants to read to me every day because he can understand better if he reads out loud. After he read a book to me we went to the computer and I helped him find the book and then he took a test and he made a 100%. Then after he got done with that this student name Emily wanted to read a book to me and we seat down on the floor and she read me the book and I helped her say some of the words. After she got done she went to the computer and she didn’t need any help. So Branson read to me again and took another test and made another 100%. After they got done reading which was for about 30 minutes they got in the floor and got there reading books. Today they were reading a story called Jump and it is about Michael Jordon. While they were reading I was stapling graded papers and stamping a place where the parents can sign the papers. After I got done with that it was time for me to leave and I said goodbye to everybody some students gave me hugs.
Today was my fourth day in my placement. I was in Mrs. Rivers class because it was Tuesday. I started my day by signing in the front office then heading off to 5th grade class room. I got there and the kids all said hey! I signed in with Mrs. Rivers, then watched the kiddos do their Math and sentence warm-ups. After they got done with their warm-ups they read quietly until class started. While they read Mrs. Rivers checked their homework. When class started, they started with Math. They went over their division homework. They continued to do division for class work. Some problems they did while I was there was 55 divided by 8. 234 divided by 9. 899 divided by 5. She also taught them the five steps to division. They are; dividing, multiply, subtract, bring down and repeat until finished. I can’t wait to go back and help kiddos.
I was absent on Tuesday, November 13. I didn't go to school or my placement because I felt sick. I really wish I could have came to my placement at least because I enjoy being here. It's a really fun experience that will only be given to me once in a lifetime. I promise to never miss another day again.
