Today, when I arrived at my placement the students were walking down the hall to class. The students had they morning show at 8:00am and then the students from each class that reached each of their AR goals got to be on the morning show. Then everybody came in the hall and then the students that got recognized walked down the hall way and back up. After the AR parade the students went back to class. As the students came back into class they got out their book and started reading quietly. There were two students that wanted to read to me today and that were Branson and Robyn. The students read for about 20 minutes and then they got to the floor to check homework. They reviewed there suffix’s and homework before they received their reading and spelling test. While the students were taking their test I was walking around making sure anybody wasn’t cheating. Mrs. Mason went over some of the question that they have never had on a test before and then I looked around a few more times. After that it was time for me to go and I said bye to everybody.
Day seven Today when I arrived at NCMS, I went in the front office and signed in like usual. Then walked to Mrs. Kahler’s room and did the normal routine. We watched the morning show and then today they had a spelling quiz. The spelling quiz was on all of the word they have been practicing this week. I hope they all did well. After they got done with their test Mrs. Kahler told them that were going to be working in groups today. Mrs. Kahler put everyone in groups by counting them off. Today the students had another chart they had to fill out. The chart had things on it like finding vocabulary from “The Black Cat” and then they had to find parts that were very disturbing. After that they had to make up questions they had for this story. The students all worked so hard. While they were in the groups they didn’t get off task at all. They all stayed on task and did what they were supposed to. It made me really proud of them. Normally when students are put into groups they get off topic and talk about irrelevant things and they don’t get much done, but it shocked me at how much work they accomplished. We had a very productive day and I also loved that I got to get up and walk around they classroom and visit each group and answer questions. We had a very good day in English!
Unfortunately I was unable to make it to my placement this morning. I did not remember till late yesterday that I had signed up to take the ASSET test. I called my placement teacher and asked her if it was okay that I did not come by Midway at all. I was going to try to go by Midway and then try to make it to North Central High School by 8. She told me that I would be rushed too much and that it was fine and she would just plan on seeing me on Monday. The test began at 8 o’clock in North Central’s price theater. The test lasted for three hours so I was glad I came straight to North Central instead of having to rush. I can’t wait for Monday so I can go back to Midway Elementary.
Today was another great day in room 607, for today was test day. You could feel the anticipation for the test as the students walked into the class. Some of the students had seagull so they either took the test early or waited for Monday. One of the students whose name i cannot recall had to have set a record for how fast a test can be taken. As soon as she got the test she started working. I swear to you she was done in less than two minutes. And the cool thing about it was she Aced the test. Just full out dominated it. I know this because i graded the test today for Mrs. Lesher. But before all that i had an important job to do for the teacher. I had to run a important paper to Mrs. Pate, the vice principal, discussing the write ups that a student had. The paper was to say the student had ISS, in school suspension, so i felt important in a small way. Anyway, back to grading the papers; i had to grade the papers of the seagull people by hand which i thought was neat because i like doing things like that. Then when the rest of the class was done i had to collect all the Scan-trons so i could take them to the scanner. Now this was my first time using this machine so i was utterly surprised at how it worked. I was gleaming, i felt like a kid who had just found a new toy. It was so funny though, it was almost like a game of uno or something like that. But anyway i graded the test and made my way back to the room. The bell rung and i made my way out anxiously waiting next week because next week we start group actives.
Today was the seventh day in my classroom. I was with Mrs. Rivers today because it was Friday. When I normally pull into the school no one is there but a couple of cars but when I got there the whole parking lot was full of cars. I had to park so far away from the school. When I got into the building I went to sign into the office and asked Mrs. Sullivan what was going on, she said “we are having out AR parade today.” That is where they kids who have reached over 25% of their AR goal get mentioned in Friday morning show and then they walk down the hall and the kids and parents clap and cheer them on. When that was finished we got back in the class room and the kids went over their homework from the night before. Then we went over the Math and sentence warm-ups. When the class was finished with that we set up five stations. I was at the game we had played the day before. It was to help with their dividing skills. I had Christopher, Rachel, Donald, and Elijah in my group. I just helped them with the game and watched them play. By the time I knew it, Veta came to the door and it was time to go. I was having a blast with my group. I can’t wait for Tuesday!
On the seventh day of my placement, I got to do the most exciting task of them all, grade papers. I spent the whole class period grading the scantrons because of the way they were set up. From numbers 1-17 were one quiz and 18-36 were another. The grades were pretty good as I was shocked to see a lot of high B's, low A's and even a couple 100's. As I was grading papers, Mr. Leininger let the students know that there was going to be a quiz Monday on the facts that he has given them all week. He told them that they should also know the pre-amble by now and that Monday would also be the day that they would be doing the pre-amble speech. The class took notes until the last ten minutes where Mr. Leininger stopped them and gave them a sheet of paper and told them to get in groups of two. They had six minutes to finish the worksheet to win. One group finished with two minutes left while others struggled with number five. Everybody was having fun doing it and when he told everyone the answers they all just laughed at themselves for not knowing it. Once class was over I stayed for an extra five minutes to finish grading the papers. Once I finished I met with Parker and left.
Today class started off as it normally would with the reading and the AR Test. Some of the students haven’t even met their reading goal, so Mrs. Sowell was really upset with them because she allows them the whole week to work on their AR reading goals. While they were working on making their reading goal I took their lunch count so that the lunch lady would know how many of each lunch to make. Mrs. Sowell and I went over the days that I’m supposed to be teaching my lessons so that she’ll know and won’t have anything planned. That’s about all we did today because the students had to finish meeting their reading goals. The ones who didn’t finish meeting their reading goals by 8:30 would lose their recess and have to walk under the black top at recess. I searched online for activities to go along with my lessons soon after working hard on that it was time for me to go.
Today is my 18th birthday and I am super excited to spend the day with my kids. As soon as I walked in they started asking me if it was my birthday. Since today is Friday, we had “Live TV” which is the same thing as our NCNN Program back at the high school. Live TV is a way for student that has met their AR goal to at least 25%. Most of my kids were recognized but some of them had to stay in class. Some parents came in and watched Live TV with us and waited till we started the “AR Parade”, which is nothing more than all the kids walking down the hall and everyone else clapping for them. Keri and I stood at the end of the hall way behind the parents and talked about how we thought the parade was a good thing to recognize the kid’s hard work. Once the parade was over and all the kids were back in their room, an announcement came over the intercom. The lady on the intercom said some general information and right before she got off she said, “Today we also have a very special person turning 18. She is one of our Teacher Cadets. So when you see Amanda Self, make sure you tell her Happy Birthday.” When the announcements were over, my kids asked Mrs. Catoe if they could sing Happy Birthday to me and give me a “Birthday Straw”. Mrs. Catoe said yes, but only after Morning Meeting was over. When Mrs. Catoe called me up to the front of the class, she grabbed a mug off the cabinet and told me to pick a straw that had a paper balloon on it. The kids started singing and I had to record them because it made my heart melt. My kids had time to study so I was giving a super fun job of grading papers. I done with most of them but, since its Friday, the kids had to take their spelling and reading test. I was allowed to walk around and help them with a word but I couldn’t give the answers. I liked helping them, but I wish I could have helped a little bit more because I had to leave before they were done with their reading test.
On the seventh day of my placement, when I arrived there were so many cars. I thought to myself what could be going on then I remembered that Mt. Pisgah was having the A.R. parade to honor the students excellence in reading. I was sitting in the room when the Landon walked in and he thought that Amanda was my "mom" since it was A.R day. Once all the other kids entered the room, Matthew was telling me that his birthday was today so we all wished him a happy birthday. All the students got to walk down the all so Amanda, Keri, and me were all behind everyone clapping for the students. After all the students were back in class, an announcement was made saying that the parents need to sign a paper to record their presence so Matthew thought they were talking about "presents" for him since it was his birthday. After getting back into class Mrs. Joyner gave me a group and I reviewed their reading story with them which was not to bad. I had most of the students that would listen very well. Overall today was a very interesting day.
Today started off a little weird. When the students got here some of them were dressed up and I couldn't figure out why. I learned that it was dress up as your favorite book character (& bring the book) to school day for American Education Week. They would be having a parade later on with everyone that had participated, but I didn't get to see. We had a Woody, a princess, and Olivia the Pig in class. After morning show and journals they had a reading test. Every other student got these things called private offices instead of stacking up books the way we use to. The test had 3 parts; two of them were filling in the right words and one was comprehension of their reading story. Afterwards they read AR books and waited to go to art class.
Today we experienced the problems you run into when you plan to incorporate technology into a lesson. Every morning the students watch CNN Student News, but today the internet did not seem to want to cooperate so Mrs. Ingram decided to use the time to conduct a quick review on the material that we covered so far regarding the Independence Movements. At first the only students participating were the usual students but as soon as Mrs. Ingram began offering candy as a reward for a correct answer many hands shot into the air. I was surprised that once the kids had motivation how many of them participated and how well they knew the information. This proved to me how well the students pay attention and I hope that when I have an opportunity to teach they will be able to answer my questions just as well. Right before I was about to leave Mrs. Ingram gave me progress reports to hand out to the students because she wanted me to practice learning their names; because this was second block and not first I didn’t quite know all of their names yet, but I didn’t do too bad.
