Today is Friday November 30, 2012 and my 14th day at Midway Elementary. When I got to the school this morning I went to the front office and signed in. once I made it to Mrs. Hayes’s room I was immediately sent to the library. Leanna and I went and got Mrs. Hayes and Mrs. Davis a computer cart. When I got back to the classroom I took the breakfast, and lunch count. After I took the counts I went to the teacher’s lounge to pick up the students reading quiz. While I was in the teacher’s lounge the principal asked for the name of my Teacher Cadet teacher; so I went to the office and wrote down Mrs. Sutusky’s name. She wanted to contact Mrs. Sutusky to see if next Thursday any of the Teacher Cadets could come to Midway for a meeting and child care at 5:30. After I went to the office I went back to the class and got the wrap up game to continue working with another group. Today I worked with Meagan, Zyona, Donovan, Collin, and Robert. Today it took a while for them to get the hang of the game I had to keep repeating myself over and over again. I didn’t mine though because in the end they could do it on their own. After a while it was time for me to go so I went back to the office and signed out.
My Friday was highly interesting. It started out like a normal day in the classroom. The students came in and go ready with the normal routine, you know the constant talking and pulling the chairs out so everyone could sit down. You could sort of tell it was going to be a rowdy day because of how hyper everyone was, it was a definate friday in these kids minds. They had the eyes looking at the weekend and it cost them big time. Reason being is because today was test today, and me being a student i could tell not a one of them studied like they should have. We went through noraml test day procedures and let the student study a bit before the test was handed out. After about five minutes everything needed to be off their desk and the test was passed out. I proceed to walk around the room and check on things and observe what was going on just to be a good teacher cadet. One student kept turning around and talking to the student behind him so i had to get on him about that. One by one students came up and turned in their test. After all was finished i took the scantron sheets down to the staff room after hand grading a couple of them and i began to scan them. One after another my hopes and dreams were being crushed as i watch the grades come out. F after F and D after D was the outcome. We had one A in the whole class. I knew the teacher wouldnt be pleased about this so i walked into class with my head down and gave her the grades. As i thought she went off, saying how dissapointed she was in these grades and after all the ranting she made them take the entire test over but this time she read them the test and made them mark out at least two answer choices. I somehow felt this was my fault becasue it was me that helped teach some of this lesson. I feel like i didnt do them a good enough job. But we had one A so i feel the information was there they just didnt seek it. The saying goes "you can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink" and i guess that applys to teaching as well. No matter how much you teach and try you cant make the student learn and i guess thats the lesson here.
Today was a pretty easy day for the kids because the only had to watch the news and not fill out their sheets because it was Friday. While they watched the news I worked on getting their packets for the Jeopardy game together and Mrs. Ingram explained how she wanted me to run the game. The packets I put together have the actual slides from the Jeopardy game on the paper and Mrs. Ingram makes them write down each answer next to the question because she uses these questions later on for her quizzes. By the time the news show was over, Mrs. Ingram explained to the class that I would be running the review game and that they needed to be on their best behavior. I handed out their packets and started the review game. Overall it went pretty well, but there were a few kids who did not raise their hand and shouted out and were reprimanded by Mrs. Ingram. I enjoyed the review game and I surprised myself by knowing the answers to the questions along with the kids. After Jeopardy, I told the kids to get out their study baggies and if they wanted to they could work with a partner. During this time, Mrs. Ingram worked at her desk and I walked around the classroom. I made sure all of the kids were actually studying and ended some of their discussion that weren’t relevant to the activity. When I started interacting with the kids, they returned the gesture and had all kinds of questions for me. First block ended, and the second block class came in and started watching their news. Because I have to leave at 9:15 I was only able to start off the review game with the kids, but I enjoyed working with them. So far this was my favorite day and I am very exciting for the rest of my teaching experience!
Today I signed in as I normally would and noticed that the class was quiet while I was walking down the hallway. I knew Mrs. Sowell had to be back. When I got in the class the students were working on work that they were supposed to do yesterday for their social studies class, since Mrs. Sowell wasn’t here it got put off until today. Today the morning show worked in our classroom so the students watched that in the meantime, Mrs. Sowell sent me to the copier to make copies of two worksheets front and back. After I got back to the classroom Mrs. Sowell had made them come to a stopping point, so that they could move on with their writing. Mrs. Sowell said she had looked over some of their writing and that the students still weren’t doing well as they should be. Now they are starting on their writing, using dictionaries to correct their writing or adding detail. I walked around to make sure that were doing what they are supposed to be doing most of them are since Mrs. Sowell is back. Unfortunately, after doing errands for Mrs. Sowell and walking around the room making sure that the kids are on task time has flown by quickly.
Today at Mt. Pisgah the students had the live news show. Before the news show came on I sharpened the students' pencils and we did our warm up. After the news show the students had to take a math test. Mrs. Joyner split the students up and half took the test while the other half went to the computer lab to type each spelling word twice. Their warm up was to copy the spelling words so they would have them to use for the computer lab. The math quiz was very simple. It required students to color the right shape with the right color and asked what day is after monday and an addition problem. Most of the students made a hundred. When the students finished the test I had to take them down to the computer lab and if they did not behave send the ones that didn't back. So Mekhi was being loud and pushing others so I sent him back to class. Once in the lab I had to help Mrs. Stephens set up computers for the students. Then I went back to Mrs. Joyner and soon it was time for me to go. I can't wait to start another week with my kids.
Today was Friday and that means I am in Mrs. River’s class. The day started as normal. I got to my placement and started down the hallway to the 5th grade classroom. When I got there the kids were getting out their math binders and doing their warm-ups. I walked around the class and helped kids if they needed help. While doing warm-up the live TV came on and the new show came on. They talked about the flu, weather and upcoming events. After the Friday morning show the kids finished up their warm-ups. After that Mrs. Rivers went over the warm-ups. After the warm-ups were done we finished up the groups we had started on Tuesday. I was doing the division game like the other days. I had a couple groups today. They were all very good and focused. They loved the game just like the other days. It took them a minute to get back into how to play it but they got it. Before I knew it, it was time to leave. I had a wonderful day and can’t wait to see what the other days have in store for me.
My Friday was great because today was test day. I made my first double sided copy for the test in the teachers lounge today which was very interesting. Mr. Polk showed me how to sort it and double side it very easily and I watched in amazement. I did the SC Facts warm-up with the students and then it was time for the test. Mr. Leininger told them to take out their notes if they were going to use them and good luck to them as he handed out the tests. I could really tell they were ready for the test as it took some of them only twenty minutes to finish. Once the tests were picked up and completely finished Mr. Leininger asked how hard it was and they all said it was easy. They said they all knew they had an A. I really liked seeing this class have confidence like this and the fact they all want to get a good grade even seems great. Since we had some time left, Mr. Leininger introduced them to the next section, the Antebellum Period. I am very familiar with this period and I am glad to be able to teach part of this lesson. He showed them a video and then class was dismissed. By that time it was time for me to head back over to the high school.
Today started off normal but then Mrs. Farnum had to leave and then it got interesting. Her sub turned out to be another teacher at the school named Ms. Burrows, she's really nice and really funny. She came into class to sub but it was interesting because I'm always here the kids started calling me to help them on anything they needed with their math. They were really good for us though even though their day had gotten changed from the normal. We had computer issues today though they were working on the network connections so the Internet was down. The kids got to finish their math but most of them didn't get to score.
As soon as I arrived to my placement I told Mrs. Mason that Mrs. Sutusky changed the date that she is going to come and observe me. Then as the students were coming in the classroom the students unpacked and put their book bag up. The students started reading their AR books and a few raised their hand and told me that they want to read to me. The students read to me one at a time and then they took a test on each book. After AR times it was time for the students to take a test on their story of the week. Mrs. Mason went over how to answer each different kind of question that is on the test. After she did that she asked me would take a student name Branson and read each question and answer to him because he is having trouble reading. While I was reading everything to him and he actually was doing a whole lot better. The test was pretty long and I got done reading the test to him when it was about nine o’clock. Then when I walked him back to class I told Mrs. Mason how could he did as I read the questions.
Today in my placement was a great day. We had the kids do there moring work then had them go to circle time. We did our smart board lesson and the kids paid very close attention. I made sure all the kids were in their right sets. Mrs Gandy red the students a book then we went to our group time.
As usual, we go through our daily routine. Instead of almost complete silence, Mrs. Catoe turned on the songs that the kids are singing in the Christmas Program on December 11th at 6pm. As soon as the songs came on, the kids started singing along and knew almost every word. I was surprised at how well they knew the songs. I didn’t get to participate in Morning Meeting today because Shelia was out sick yesterday and she missed a test so I had to help her with it. Again today we have three out, Kayden, Rachel and Daisy. After Morning Meeting was over, the kids practiced their name in sign language just to get extra credit on a low grade. When the kids were going back to their seats, Kimbelee ripped a sheet of paper out of her notebook and handed it to me. When I looked down at it I wanted to give her a big bear hug because she drew me a picture of the beach. After the kids were settled in their seats, we started on our Math Quickie/Daily Language test so we could get started out other work. I walked around and helped the kids with words or other problems they had. Mrs. Catoe had put some Addition and Subtracting with Regrouping practice sheets on an empty desk for the kids to start on when they finished their test. My heart was melted twice today. One was with the drawing from Kimberlee and the other time was when I caught Clara Grace reading to Carter. These kids are like my babies, they have grown on me so much over the past weeks. I love each and every one of them like they are my own.
