It was my fifth day at Midway Elementary. This morning was off to a good start. When I got to the school I signed in at the front office and went to the classroom. Well to begin the day I helped a kid named Collin take down all the chairs off the desk. After that I went into the hallway with Mrs. Hayes to watch the kids while they read. Once they read for a little while, the students came into the classroom. When they came into the classroom they got their breakfast and I marked them off the list. After they got their breakfast I took the lunch count for the day. Today at Midway was for students to bring in canned food so they could wear a hat day. Only five students brought in a can so I cut out a bracelet and put it on their wrist so they would not get in trouble for having on their hat. Today they did not have testing so the first thing the students did was write a story in their journals. While they were writing their stories I got out green paper and called them over to me one by one. When I called them over I traced their hand five times on the green paper. After I traced everyone’s hands I called them back one by one to help cut the hands out. The hands are going to be used to make a big Christmas tree. One kid in particular I had just finished tracing his hands and he walked back to his desk and sat down. Not long after that he threw up all over the floor. Besides the student feeling sick it was a very productive day. I can’t wait to see how the Christmas tree will look once it is finished being decorated.
Today wasn’t really a productive day for me because they were going to be starting their writing part of their PASS test. Class started as it usually would with reading and AR test. Reading didn’t last that long because they had to get ready to start their writing test. The students stood up and said the pledge allegiance and their school mission statement. Before starting their test Mrs. Sowell allowed them to go to the restroom row by row. When everybody got situated in their desks, Mrs. Sowell told them to clear their desk. While Mrs. Sowell was going over the directions and the writing prompt, I passed out the pencils, test packet, and extra paper. The kids looked like they were scared to take the test. A lot of them had trouble starting, when they finally got in the process of writing a lot of them finished quickly. While they were taking their test they would raise their hand for me to bring them a dictionary or either a thesaurus. I really didn’t get to do a lot because of their writing. Today was a good laid back day overall. I’m ready to see what tomorrow has in store.
Today was my fifth day in my placement. I started my day off not so good. I woke up and didn’t feel very good at all. But I wanted to see my kiddos so I went to my placement. I got there and singed in my school and signed in with Mrs. McCaskill but when I got there I felt even worse. So I went on home and got some rest. But I hope I’m better by tomorrow so I can see my kids.
Today was my fifth day in my placement and I was in Mrs. Joyner's room before she was since she was on breakfast duty. So I sat there waiting for her and all the kids to come in. While I was waiting I looked at the worksheet Mrs. Joyner had for the day. At the beginning of class I helped the students do their worksheet. The worksheet was on subtracting like one problem was 4-2= and some of the students were adding rather than subtracting so I had to help them out. Also on that sheet the students had fill in the blank questions. After the class finished this worksheet Mrs. Joyner broke the students off into groups. She put the ones who have the most trouble reading with me and I had to go over that sheet with all those words on them with them. The students really did not any of them. They did not know the word "him", "his", "could", and many more but I tried my best to sound them out with them. After going over that with them it was time for me to go but before I left the students began a new worksheet but I had to leave before I could help.
Today was a special day indeed for room 607, Mrs. Leshers sixth grade science class, because one i was there being a wonderful teaching assistant and two today was exploiting the way energy is released and changed. It was a very interesting class because today Mrs. Lesher brought out the tuning forks and the bottles of water. But before the fun really began i went around to every student and checked to see if they had their homework. If they had it then they got an A+ stamp and those who didnt have it got a zero and no stamp. After i did all that we had to sit down and go through a powerpoint based on the energys disscussed previously. I aided Mrs. Lesher pass out paper and then the lesson got started. We first started by taking the tuning forks and hitting them on the side of the desk and holding them up to our ears. Then we hit the tuning forks again and dipped them in the water to notice the vibrations the fork gave off. After that the tuning fork was again hit and then placed on the side of the cup so the sound of the vibrations could be heard. Once all this was done class was over and i helped Mrs. Lesher clean up before leaving my beloved class room.
I started today off with something new. As I walked in and put down my things, Mr. Leininger told me to make copies of the Bill of Rights and a worksheet for the students. Apparently everyone in the school needed to print and copy things, and I waited there for nearly ten minutes. When I finally got to use the printer, Mr. Leininger came in to check on me. I walked back into the classroom and he asked me if I knew how to use a scantron. I told him no and he showed me how to use one. I spent about ten doing that until I completely graded all classes. When I walked back into the classroom, they were writing down things to donate to a little girl. Everyone in the school is donating a box of things to a little kid in a third world country. I wish the high school could do something like this because a few people like to help out others in need, including myself. Afterwards they took down their daily facts. Mr. Leininger talked about the difference between the american dictionary and the british-english dictionary due to one of the facts being about Noah Webster creating the first American dictionary. Everyone asked about the land bridge theory and Mr. Leininger described that where the Bering Strait is, there was a "bridge of ice" that connected Alaska and Russia. The ice melted, leaving the people who moved to America stuck. When everyone finished they took notes on the US Constitution until class ended.
Day five Today, like usual I came to the middle school and signed in and then just sat around and talked to the students waiting on the news show to start. After the news show went off they did a warm-up on how to change run into running. They practiced adding (-ing, -er, -ist).They also went over their homework from yesterday on Tell Tale Heart. They all discussed answers on the homework and I liked listening to what each student had to say. They all have their own opinion. I love being able to sit back and watch them. Today there isn’t really a lot of movement in the classroom. They are starting “Black Cat” today. I’m excited to hear this story again. It has been a long time since I heard this story. While they are reading they have to highlight things they don’t understand and then things that remind them of “Tale Tell Heart”. The students also have to find words they don’t know and underline it so they can discuss all of this later. I asked Mrs. Kahler if she had another packet so I could follow along and she said yes, and gave me one. The whole time she was reading I was underlining stuff so that if the students had to ask me questions when they start filling out there charts I would know exactly how to answer them. I’m happy we started a new lesson and I’m here at the beginning of it so I’m not lost. I’m so excited about reading the rest of the “Black Cat” to see what happens, because I can’t remember it’s been so long. I’m sad I had to leave them today; we were having such a good time reading. I can’t to be there tomorrow.
Today in class we started off normally with journals, me going over popcorn words with students that needed testing, and the morning show. I did get to see something interesting today after the morning show, they did this thing called morning movement. It was an exercise video for kids that they played and the students got up and exercised for a little while. I thought that was really different and it was the first time I'd seen it. After morning movement they had their addition problems timed memory quiz. The majority of the class has passed the two minute mark and are now doing them in a minute. After they finished that they got their accelerated math sheets and I got to help them with problems when they needed it. One minute I could be helping one student with a simple subtraction problem and the next the other was working on counting money, everyone is on different letters. One student I've been helping I can tell is starting to remember and catch on to things we've been working on. When they finished this they made thank you cards for Walmart for donating supplies or money for school supplies to the school. I left when they were on their way to guidance class.
Today, after the children came in the class they sat down and then put their lunch cards in a pocket for what they wanted for lunch. Then while they were reading I went around and checked to see if they got their agenda signed by their parent. If the children got their agenda signed then they get one ram buck. After that I sat down and the little child name Branson wanted to read to me. Branson read a book to me about gorillas and then he took a test and did well. While Branson was looking for another book then Emily which is a child that likes to read to me read a book to me. Emily read a book to me which was about vegetables and then she took a test on that book. When AR time was up all the children got to the floor to do their reading and first they reviewed vocabulary for the story. As she was reading each page the students would pick out the facts and opinions. After that the children got graded papers back and then I walked them down to the library. While they were in the library they were writing what they were thankful for on turkey feathers. Then after that they had to color it and glue it to a big piece of paper that the librarian had for them. I told the class bye and I would see them tomorrow.
Yesterday was a mess. I was so glad that my second graders didn’t have testing because that meant I could stay in the class until it was time for me to leave for North Central. My kids started their day off like any other with “Morning Meeting” on the rug. That is where they do their spelling practice, BOGGLE words, and the daily number. Today’s number was 47 and they had to do certain things with the number; such as write it out, draw it, add/subtract five, add/subtract ten, and the number before and after. My desk is right next to the rug where they do their “Morning Meeting” so the kids like to talk to me while they work. Mrs. Catoe comes to the rug and starts going over stuff. She does the “Math Calendar” which is how many days we have been in school, writing the number out, using base-ten blocks to count the days and also using coins to count. After their “Morning Meeting” they had to start their spelling practice at their desk. Mrs. Catoe informed me that today she would be doing something different with the practice and the kids would probably need help. They were to write their words, then look on the handout to see how much each letter was worth in change. Each letter was represented by a coin, quarter, dime, nickel, and penny. The kids then had to add the coin amounts together and get a total worth of the word. What the kids didn’t know was that they were getting spelling and math practice in one. When they were finished with their practice they could sign-up to read with me. I started reading and lost track of time, so I left from Mt. Pisgah late and was almost late for my next class.
This morning everyone was getting settled down in the classroom and getting their materials out to begin the day’s lesson when Officer Lyons asked to speak with Mrs. Ingram in the hallway. I wasn’t sure what was going on but I stayed in the class to supervise the kids while they talked in the hallway. A girl then walked in the class who I thought was a new student, but it turns out I had just not met her yet. A lot of the students became rambunctious and talkative when the girl came in, but Mrs. Ingram came back in the class and got everyone settled down. Once Mrs. Ingram got the students working she pulled me aside to tell me what was going on. It turns out the girl, Carey, has social issues and after getting a haircut she was nervous about coming into the classroom so she went to Officer Lyons to talk. I felt sorry for the little girl because I realized that all the talking was about the girl and her new haircut when she came in. This little event reminded me of how mean kids can be. Mrs. Ingram wrote up Mike Jones because she told the students to keep their comments to themselves so they wouldn’t upset Carey when she came in and he made a negative comment about her. Today I was also supposed to grade papers, but I believe Mrs. Ingram forgot about it due to all of the chaos.
