It is Thursday November 29, 2012 and my 13th day at Midway Elementary School. Today I got to the school and signed in as usual. Once I signed in at the front office I signed in with Mrs. Hayes. After a few minutes of talking to Mrs. Hayes I got the paper to take the breakfast and lunch count. After taking the count I turned on the TV to the morning news show. Once the kids did their morning exercise I was asked to make a banner for tonight’s play. The banner was “The Night Before Christmas in red and green letters with a black shadow behind it. I glued all the letters down and then helped the kids into their costumes. We then headed to the cafeteria to practice one time before they put on a show for the kindergartners. Before too long one of the boys had already broken his reindeer antlers and the practice hadn’t even begun yet. After a few minutes of getting all the kids settled it was time for me to leave so I went to the office and signed out.
Today was Thursday which means I was in Mrs. River’s class. It was a normal day at my placement. I started off down the hallway and made it to my classroom. After I got in the class the kids were getting their math journals out so they could do their warm-ups just like normal. I walked around the classroom while the kids worked on their math. If they needed some help I would help them. After they got done with that the kids who were done would read while the others would finish. After they finished with that Mrs. River’s checked the kid’s homework. After that they went over the warm-up, which was all multiplication. After that she broke the kids into five different groups so they could go to five different stations. I had the station with the division game so I could monitor the kids and help them if they needed it. It was very fun, and I enjoyed it a lot. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow has to offer.
Today was a bit different for me than a normal day in the life of a middle school teacher. They say you learn something new every day, well of course I do because I’m still in school but I learned something very intriguing to me. I found out that when you are in the aged of around sixth grade and you get a lot of these kids together they can be quite noisy and frankly annoying at times. I still love teaching these students but if I had stayed in gym duty any longer than what I did I might have yelled at someone. The whole reason of my being on gym duty is because I had to discuss some details with my teacher about her absence on Monday and we had to go over what I should do when I should do it and how I should do it so I’m not stepping on her toes and follow the flow of how she works and interacts with the class. All and all the experience was very enlightening and I feel I walked away with a little bit more to go off of when teaching. When we finally got to class today was the legit review day for the test tomorrow so I got to do the study guide with the kids and I feel I did a good job with the kids because I was a little more familiar with the material and I was able to pull more Intel and examples off the top of my head than yesterday. There was also a PowerPoint that we went over to once again reinforce what the material was in class we learned. Tomorrow is test day for these guys so I really hope they went home and studied so they can pass and do well tomorrow. If they could hear me right now I would tell them to get a good night’s sleep and good luck for tomorrow.
Today I arrived and the students were not in there but Mrs. Joyner was back, thank God. The substitute from the day before had left a note of students who misbehaved. The list had around 10 people on it and the students who were not on the list, I gave two ram bucks to. Mekhi was the main student who gave the substitute a hard time, the note said he was never stay in his seat and was constantly talking throughout the whole day. When the students came, a few of them asked Mrs. Joyner if she was ok. The students had there sheet already on their desk this morning. The students had to write sentences using their spelling words. While they were doing that Mrs. Joyner asked me to go through the students folders to see if any notes from parents were in them and to see the reading logs of the students, see if they met their goal. While looking through the folders, I got to Cayce's and her brothers interim was in there so I had to take that over to Mrs. Catoe's class. Once I finished with the folders, Mrs. Joyner put six students into my group and she had some in her group the rest had read to self time. My group behaved very well today and actually listened. First of all we had to read the reading story of the week as a group. Then after reading the story i reviewed their spelling words with them. Once I reviewed them I had to give them a pre-test on the words and the students did a great job. Once I was finished with that, it was time to go.
Today seem to start a little earlier than usual but it was a good day nonetheless. I wore a Miami hoodie today and Mr. Leininger commented on it which led to a conversation about football until the morning show was over with. Once it finished I did the warmup, which again today was pretty easy and ended quicker than I thought. I tried to interact with the kids more but they were so quick to answer that it was hard to keep up with them. They knew the answer to my question before I finished saying it. Once I finished, Mr. Leininger announced they had a test tomorrow on the notes they took yesterday and the ones from yesterday. They reviewed on cotton today and looked at how it influenced the slave population and where it was the densest. For the last bit of class they played two review games. Everyone who was selected to go up or answer the question they got it right. At the end of class they were told they could use their notes on the test tomorrow but the test is timed. After that, class was dismissed and it was time for me to come back to the high school.
Today was the third day of chaos with the selling of the dance tickets. Because of the sale, there have been a lot of kids from all over the school in and out of the classroom early in the morning, but I think the kids are enjoying it because they can get away with more talking. The first thing I did was run the money to Mrs. Gaskins because today was the biggest sale so far, and on my way back I grabbed a coffee for Mrs. Ingram. Today the kids finished their notes on the Industrial Revolution finally, and I have to say I too was glad. After they finished their notes they took out their study baggies and worked on their maps while Mrs. Ingram and I discussed my lesson plans for my evaluation day. Now that she was finally finished with her daily lectures we also discussed new things I could do to interact with the class more and even begin some teaching. We came up with a verbal quiz after the news show that I could do with them. We also decided that I would run all review games with them and also administer some quizzes. I think now that I am actually going to begin my teaching segment I am going to enjoy my field experience much more!
Today when I came to class Mrs. Sowell wasn’t here. Mrs. Young from the library was watching the class for the day. I automatically knew that the majority of the class wouldn’t want to follow the classroom rules that they would normally follow if Mrs. Sowell was here. When I finally got settled at my desk and the students started coming in I noticed that they were already whispering to each other about something that one of the students did or said about each other. When class actually started Mrs. Young had me pass out their writing prompt, as soon as I laid the paper down they immediately said, “We already did this.” I noticed myself that they had already done this writing prompt when they were practicing for their Bench Mark tests. This was the only work that Mrs. Sowell had left them to do for their writing period. Since they have already done it most of them didn’t want to write or either said they didn’t have anything to write about. As I walked around the room only a few of the students had been writing. Some of them wrote two sentences to a paragraph and asked me was it enough and could they start reading. I advised them to write a little bit more, Mrs. Young had told them to write until she told them to stop writing but they didn’t want to listen to her they asked me thinking that my answer would be different from hers. Instead of the students getting dictionary’s like they would if Mrs. Sowell was here they kept calling me to their desk to help them spell words. One kid asked me how to spell Australia after I spelled it to him he told me that it was R – O – N – G. I asked him what did rong spell and he said wrong and I told him W – R – O – N – G, wrong. Mrs. Young, Kelley, and I laughed so hard, he just knew he was right. I walked around for a few more minutes then it was time for me to go. I signed out, said bye to Mrs. Young and to my students.
As soon as I arrived at my placement the students started working on AR reading and some students read to me. I took the attendance and then checked who wanted what for lunch. I checked the student’s agenda book and their homework. I talked to Mrs. Mason about my lesson that I am going to teach. I helped a few students with some words during the test. After they got done with AR time all the students went to the floor and reviewed their story of the week for their test tomorrow. I graded two different sets of papers of math work. Everybody did meanly well on the test and after I got done graded the test I put them on her desk. Then after that I went around looking at everybody looking in their book and seeing who was paying attention. Then after the students and Mrs. Mason got done with reviewing they all went back to their seats. I told all the students bye and I will see them tomorrow and some students ran up to me and gave me a hug.
Today un mt placement was my first day teaching the kids by myself so i could be ready for my observation day next tuesday. The kids were really loud and acting up because they wernt used to me teaching them. I got the kids under control and we went through our lessons and then we went to our group work.
As you can see, we have a daily routine. As soon as the kids walk in they make their lunch choice as they walk by. Then they go to their seat and start to unpack. Usually, Mrs. Catoe will tell them what they need to have unpacked and put in their desk. Today was their Social Studies book and their AR books. After they unpack, they go to their cubbies and get the “Morning Meeting” journals and then go sit on the rug to start. In Morning Meeting they do a number of things. They have “Today’s Number”, BOGGLE, Spelling and Number of Days in School. Today’s number was 62, they had to spell it (sixty-two), draw it, add five and minus five from it, find the number before and after, then add and subtract ten. Here lately I have been doing BOGGLE and the kids have been getting longer words than I do. After the kids were done with their Morning Meeting stuff, they could read with me. I got to read with two, Cole and Clara Grace, because they both had longer books than normal. Once everyone was finished, we did Math Quickie/Daily Language and since three of my kids were out, I had to do one for Cameron. Since tomorrow is Friday, the kids got to practice their spelling with playdough and then throw all of their previous spelling practice sheets in the “basketball” trashcan. Before they could take their pretest, Mrs. Catoe and I had to cover up any spelling words that were already on the wall or anywhere in the class. Right before they started their test, I had to leave. Sad part of everyday!
