  1. It is Wednesday November 28, 2012 and my 12th day at Midway Elementary School. Today I got to the school and signed in as usual. Once I signed in at the front office I signed in with Mrs. Hayes. After a few minutes of talking to Mrs. Hayes I got out my stuff for my lesson plan. I asked Mrs. Hayes if she had any workbooks to go with her teaching book. She did so instead of having to print off worksheets I have workbooks the students can use. I decided that I’m going to bring in some of my construction paper for a banner the kids are going to create. After I figured all of that out I took the breakfast count and turned the TV on for the morning news show. We were running behind this morning so the students didn’t get to do their morning exercise. This morning they had to drop everything and write for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes Mrs. Hayes asked me to take groups aside and teach them how to do the Math game called “wrap up.” I only got to one group today because a few of them were having trouble learning how to do it. While I teached those students Mrs. Hayes read over the story they read the other day. After I finished with each student helping individually after they got started on their own It was time for me to leave. Once I left the class I signed out and headed to North Central.

  2. Today was my twelfth day at my placement and it was Wednesday which means I was in the library with Mrs. McCaskill today. Today was just like a normal day at my school; I arrived at school and went to my main classroom. When I got to my classroom I signed in with Mrs. McCaskill. After I did that we talked while she made copies of her craft for the class and I put up some books that were on the cart. When I got done with the books Mr. Branham came to the library and asked if I would help him with something so I had to help him carry two ladders to the teacher work room. When I get done with that my class was in my classroom. Mrs. McCaskill was teaching third grade how to tell if a book was fiction or nonfiction. She had them each get a book and tell whether or not they were fiction or nonfiction. By the time we got done with that Mrs. McCaskill had them take a piece of paper and take a test to see if they knew the information. I had to leave in the middle of the test because it was time to go. But I had a blast, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow has in store!

  3. Today was a hectic day in class. I walked in to class this morning and all the kids were already there. I walked in to find that Mrs. Joyner was not there today and there was a substitute, the substitute introduced herself. The substitute has never experienced this class before. The kids were out of control today, we could not get there attention for nothing. I had to take roll, do the lunch count, breakfast count, and tell the substitute what to do about the warm up sheet. I basically did everything today. After awhile, Veta came in because her class was not in there. Veta helped me calm the students down but still it really did not work. Once finished with the warm up sheet I took them up and checked them. Next they had their math sheet which they did a great job on. After that we read their story as a class and almost all the students volunteered. After done reading they had an assignment to do. Five students actually behaved and did not make to much noise so I gave them a ram buck. It was time to leave after that so I wished the substitute luck and told her to have a good day. I just hope Mrs. Joyner is back tomorrow.

  4. Today was a fun day in the life of class 607, we started out with our normal day routine by coming in and setting up the chairs with the warm up which all in all took about ten minutes total and then we got on the work for the day. Today was kind of a reviews review for the test on Friday. We went over the homework from last night and then we got to work. I had the biggest job yet, I had to do basically the whole review with these kids but Mrs. Lesher helped me out on occasion so I didn’t totally mess up that bad. I started out by doing my normal routine when I go over something and read the title and the starting paragraph so the kids knew a little of what we were talking about so they could remember what the review was about. After I finished reading I asked who would like to do number one for me and instantly hands went in the air. It’s a sweet and sour feeling when I have to call on students to do a task for me. I want everyone who is willing to volunteer to get a chance to do something and I don’t want to pick favorites but sometimes there just isn’t enough parts to go around for everyone which saddens me because me being a student I know the importance of participation, I am after all a teacher cadet. Anyways I started calling the students hand who came up first and we got through the exercise smoothly and finished class strong. Afterward me and the teacher were talking while the classes were changing and she told me she wasn’t going to be here Monday so I asked her If I could teach then. She approved so now I am patiently waiting Monday.

  5. Class ran very smooth today. I had to ask Mr. Leininger a question about the warm-up because one of the facts had literally no online source to help me with it, but other than that the facts were pretty simple. There was one fact that really caught my eye. The fact was about a slave named Robert Smalls who was a slave who took over a Confederate ship named the Planter and sailed it into the Union Navy Blockade outside of South Carolina. We had never learned about this in school and I asked Mr. Leininger about this and he said that they changed the curriculum a couple of years after we left 8th grade. After we finished talking, the class took notes on the Pre-Antebellum period. They watched a video about cotton and noted the cotton gin and its impact on slaves. After that they did an activity with cotton. Mr. Leininger picked two "slaves" for his "plantation" and two "slaves" for Scarlet's "plantation". They were given the "cotton" which was just a sheet of paper, and were told to pick the seeds out by simply pushing a hole through. Next, he picked a student to be Eli Whitney and show one of the groups the Cotton gin and how it worked, which was a hole puncher. Obviously that group won and he showed the impact it made on all places because it was a constant race for sales. He gave some candy to the people who won and before I knew it class was over.

  6. Mrs. Ingram was selling tickets again today so there were a lot of students in and out of the classroom. When that was over with we watched CNN Student News and I talked with Mrs. Ingram about getting a seating chart for my portfolio. She offered to let me use her computer to create one, but I told her I would be fine drawing it. While they continued their notes on the Industrial Revolution I worked on creating a seating chart for blocks 1 and 2 which was good practice for learning the students’ names once again. Mrs. Ingram liked the charts I drew and asked if I would make copies for her so I ran to the copy room and took care of that. On my way back from the copy room I grabbed a cup of coffee for Mrs. Ingram and then caught the end of her lecture before class ended.

  7. After I signed-in in the office I went to Mrs. Sowell’s room and signed in there. The day started off the same as the past few days with the students doing grammar correction. After they got finished with their morning work they slowly began to read and take AR Test, some went to the library. Since interims were going out today Mrs. Sowell had me to go to the teacher lounge to run off copies of her grade book so that if any parents had any questions or concerns she would be able to show them why their child is making that grade. After I made all of the copies and came back to the classroom I sat down with Mrs. Sowell and asked her where they would be in the best Christmas pageant ever since they have already started. She told me that they would be on chapter six Wednesday of next week because they weren’t going to read Monday or Tuesday. After I got an understanding of where everyone would be, I started to search for a worksheet or an activity. The activity that I found is called Puppet Script after we listen to chapter six on tape they will get into groups of four and act out their favorite part of the book. One of my students came up to me and asked me, was the lesson that I was going to be teaching going to be fun. By them asking me was my lesson going to be fun makes me feel that if I base my lesson on something active or fun I feel like they are going to be willing to do something fun. I asked Mrs. Sowell did she allow them to get in groups she said yes so hopefully they’ll like it.

  9. As I arrived to my placement the students were walking to class. The children got a couple of minutes to read their AR books and be quiet. The usually two children wanted to read to me today and then took a test. After AR time was done my children went to the library and then I talked to Mrs. Mason and she printed off my papers that I am going to tech on Monday. I went to first grade and helped my class mate Brandon with that class because they had a substitute. When I get in the class I started helping them read their story for this week. The children in the class was acting so wild and acting up. When they got done reading they wrote a few sentences about the story they read. After that they drew a picture to go along with the story and then they got a math sheet and the teacher went over it with them. After that it was time to go and I told everybody bye. Everybody said bye and I left.

  11. I fixed my shoes yesterday when I got home, so I wore them again today. As usual, my class started off like normal with morning meeting, todays’ number was 11. Something that we do every day that I haven’t talked about is how the kids make their lunch choice. They have slips of paper with their name on it at the front of the class and they drop it into a flower pot with “Fresh Express” or “Hot Line”. Today, Mrs. Catoe had to staple papers instead of read with the kids. I think I was sadder than the kids were. Yesterday some of my kids weren’t feeling too good, and today they were out sick. Since Cheyenne is the “Start Student” this week, she is allowed to bring things in to share. Today she brought her bunny, Thumper. Since David and Cameron were out sick, I had to do a Math Quickie/Daily Language for one of them. After that, the kids started spelling practice since they have a spelling pretest tomorrow. Todays’ practice was a choice; they could choose either “What is my Word Worth” or “Scrabble”. When the timer went of it signaled the end of spelling practice. Right before I had to leave, the kids were getting ready to start reading out of their reading book about Helen Keller. I almost forgot my favorite thing about today. Emma colored a picture, walked up to me and said, “I colored this just for my Miss Amanda, I hope you like it.” Before she walked away I bent down and gave her a hug and told her that I loved it. My heart melted.
