Today was my 23rd day at Midway Elementary. Today I realized that I don’t have much longer to be at Midway and I was kind of disappointed. This morning when I got to the school I signed in as I normally do and headed to Mrs. Hayes’s classroom. When I got to the classroom I took the breakfast and lunch count, and cut the news show on. After breakfast I took the papers I graded and put the grades into the grade book. After that I took the T-shirts for the kid’s fieldtrip and put numbers on the collar so we would know what shirt belonged to whom. The students will use those shirts on every field trip they go on so the numbers will keep them from being mixed up. After putting the numbers on the shirts I went to the teacher’s lounge and picked up the kids test that they would be taking. Instead of the kids reading their story they went ahead and took the test because they wouldn’t be quiet after Mrs. Hayes asked them about five times. Shortly after it was time to leave so I brought some more papers with me to grade, signed out and headed to North Central.
Today at my placement when I arrived I waited for the students to enter the class. When the children got in the room I told them to get out there agenda book and let me look to see if it is signed. After I checked their books they seat quietly and started reading. Two people read to me today and then took a test on the book. While they were reading I went around and asked them what books they were reading. I wrote down the names of the students that were reading and being good the whole time. I went and told Mrs. Mason and then I told them to move there magnets up. Then all the students went to the floor with their reading book to review their vocabulary. Then they read a story and answered some question together. After they got done with the book they went back to their desk for rotations. After they were done with their first rotations it was time for me to leave already. I told everybody bye and I will see them tomorrow.
Today again started off rough because Mr. Leininger once again forgot to give me the SC Facts for the warm-up and he had to tell me once again what to say to them. Once we finished that I walked over to Mrs. Kahler's room to tell her Happy Birthday. By that time, the students were making their way to class. Once the class officially started I began to do the warm-up. It was pretty easy and I finished very quickly. Once they finished taking them down, they started notes on a new event, Sumner V. Brookes. It was pretty funny as the whole situation was a guy getting beat by a cane while others watched. Mr. Leininger gave some pretty helpful modern day situations for them that were pretty cool. Once they finished that they looked at pictures of the situation and watched a video. They finished the video on the slaves and class soon ended. Mr. Leininger finally gave me the SC Facts and I headed back to the high school.
Today was the twenty third day that I was in my placement. I went to Mrs. McCaskill today instead of Mrs. River’s because Mrs. McCaskill was doing her classes that she missed on Monday today. When I got there I went and told Mrs. River’s I was changing classes today. I went in there and the second grade came in and we sat in a new spot because the Christmas tree was in the way of the reading rug. We read the story called “The Christmas miracle of Jonathon Toomey.” It was a very good story. Then when the kids were finished Mrs. McCaskill had them make a collage. They had a white piece of paper and a Christmas tree and red dots for the ornaments. By the time they were finished with that it was time to leave. I had a blast and cant wait for tomorrow.
Today was went as normal but it was also a special day too. It was one of the girls in my class' birthday. She got to wear a special birthday girl hat all day, we all signed a card for her and her dad even brought in cupcakes. We did popcorn words and journal writing as usual and made progress with a couple students because they moved up to their next sheet. After that it was accelerated reading time. I helped with that then and while waiting they listened to their weekly story and took AR tests. Then after we did a craft where we made Rudolph the red-nose reindeer using candy canes. It was cool, Mrs. Farnum has all kinds of crafts.
Day 23 Today is Thursday and I helped Mrs. Kahler teach today so I could practice for Friday when I have to actually do everything alone. I thought I did pretty good practicing. I’m very nervous about teaching tomorrow, but I’m ready for it. I’m teaching Inference skills, and today we got started on inference skills. We read a story “Charles” and while we were reading we had discussions about what we could infer was going to happen. The students were so shocked to see what happened at the end. It was great to see their reactions. Some said they saw it coming and others didn’t see it. It was a really good day.
Today was by far my favorite day of my placement! Today I taught my lesson and was evaluated by Mrs. Sutusky. Since Mrs. Ingram covered all of the lessons she wanted to before Christmas break, I played a vocabulary review game with the students and it went very well. I created BINGO cards for two units that the students already learned and created a quiz for them to take after the game. Normally, the students are very rambunctious, but today they were angels! I’m very glad they behaved so well while I taught and I think they really enjoyed having an easy day. Because we ran out of time the students will have to take their quiz tomorrow, but I told them they were lucky we ran out of time because that gives them an extra night to study. Monday I will teach my second lesson and be evaluated by Mrs. Ingram. I’ll be doing an introduction to the very first lesson the kids will be learning when they come back from break. I hope my second lesson goes as well as my first!
Mrs. Catoe had brown paper bags out on the desk for the kids to decorate. They were going to use the bags to take their ornaments home next Wednesday. The whole morning before library, the kids were singing “Jingle Bells” along with the iPod. Since we missed the library Monday, we went today. The kids were read a book called “Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toony.” I didn’t really like that book and I don’t think the kids understood what the book was about either because it was more “adult” like. When the kids got back from the library, we did our Morning Meeting, except the kids were being a little rowdy. Cole shared again today, this time wrestling figures. Right before I left the kids were about to start Math Quickie and Daily Lnaguage.
Today Mrs. Joyner brought these little ornaments for the kids to take home for their family and show them but we needed a picture of each child to go in the ornament. So Mrs. Joyner sent me to the library to get the IPad and take a picture of each child in front of the Christmas tree. While I was taking pictures of the kids, we had one stab another one. So Mrs. Joyner asked her if she wanted her picture taken but she said no so before I left to go print the pictures, Mrs. Joyner told me to try me best to snap a picture of her. So I was able to get her and all the other children except J.T because he was not there. Once I got all the pictures, I had to go print them but it took forever to find out how to do that. The printer was not set up so I went to Mrs. Newman to see if she had the reader but she didn't so I had to get the cable and hook it up to the computer. Good thing I am good with technology because I finally was able to get the pictures printed although it took awhile. So I went back to Mrs. Joyner's class and showed the kids their pictures and then it was time for me to leave.
Today when I arrived to my placement I signed in as I usually would. Today when I got to class Mrs. Sowell didn’t look well at all. I asked what was wrong she said that her mouth was hurting. While I was there I basically did all that I could for her so that she wouldn’t have to talk as much. I went to the teachers’ lounge and ran off their morning work. After they got finished with their morning work I allowed them to get on the computers until everybody got done. When everybody got done I went over the morning work as I normally would and made sure everyone knew why they got their answer incorrect or correct. Afterwards they had a writing prompt to work on. I went to the teachers’ lounge to run off copies for the fourth and fifth grade. Their writing prompt was different from what they normally would do. They were given the beginning of a story and they had to finish it by staying on topic and grammatically correcting it. The writing got some of the students confused. I went over the instructions at least five times and they were still asking questions. Some students went up to Mrs. Sowell with one sentence and said that they were done that really upset Mrs. Sowell. I explained that they were to at least write a paragraph. While I was walking around the classroom Mrs. Sowell told me that she was going to get something to drink so that she could take some medicine for her mouth. When she got back to the classroom it was time for me to go. I signed out and asked my students to be good for Mrs. Sowell. I wished that she felt better and I headed to North Central.
