Today is Monday December 10, 2012 and my 20th day in my placement. Today I got to Midway super early. When I arrived I went to the front office and signed in as usual. Once I signed in I went to Mrs. Hayes’s room and waited with the kids for Mrs. Hayes to arrive. When Mrs. Hayes got there she had a bunch of bags in her hands for the “Santa Shop” that she would be running that whole week. Once we brought everything into her room the kids came inside and lined up for breakfast. I took the breakfast count and Mrs. Hayes took the lunch count while I ran an errand for her. She sent me out to her car to get the rest of the toys for the shop. After I got back she sent me to the Library to get a camera to take pictures of the kids. We are going to be creating ornaments for the parents and for the bulletin board outside in the hallway. The students lined up and came out in the hallway one by one. After I took all the pictures Mrs. Hayes gave me three sets of papers to grade. While I graded the papers Mrs. Hayes asked the kids to get out their reading books so they could start looking at a new story. Once I finished grading the papers it was time to leave so I signed out and headed to North Central.
Today was my first day back after being sick. I had a horrible weekend, but being back at the middle school really made me feel better. Today was an easy day because the students were working on some review work by themselves so Mrs. Ingram and I worked on getting things graded and in the grade book. I finished grading a few quizzes and then Mrs. Ingram quickly showed me how to operate the grade book. As Mrs. Ingram finished grading her quizzes I put them in the grade book. After we finished that, we discussed what I would be doing Thursday as my lesson. In order to help the students review for their end of the year standardized test, we’ll play a BINGO game with words from the two units that they have already covered. I didn’t think this seemed like a very important lesson, but Mrs. Ingram explained to me that because there is so much information to cover, she doesn’t have nearly enough time to teach all of the vocabulary as well so this helps the kids memorize the words so that they understand the lessons better. Once I got back to the high school I started working on my lesson plans and I’m really looking forward to Thursday!
Today in my placement we sat at our tables and wrote down what they did over the weekend. The kids drew a picture and describe what they drew. When we got to cirlce time we told everybody what we did.The kids were acting a little loud and they were hyper. I had to tell the kids to settle down and they did. We did our smart board activites and then we red a book. We wen to group time and then i had to go.
Day 20 Today is Monday. Mrs. Kahler wasn’t able to make it to school today, so we had a substitute. Things were a little rowdy at first so I stood up and walked around and took control and reminded them about manners. After telling them “shhhhhh” they understood to be respectful and they were little angels from then out. I was so impressed they did well. Having a substitute there kind of gave me a chance to take more control and the students relied on me. Today all they did was finishing up the posters they started last Friday. They got back in groups and started working on them. I think a few groups got finished today, but there were a lot of students absent. We had a good day and we all missed Mrs. Kahler.
Today at my placement when the students entered the classroom they put up there book bags and then sat down at their seat. Only one kid read to me today and that was Branson and he had a pretty big book today. I read the book to him to because it had a lot of words and I read it so he can understand and make good on his AR test. After reading time I talked to Mrs. Mason about my lesson that I am going to teach tomorrow. Mrs. Sutusky will be watching me tomorrow while I teached and I am ready. After Mrs. Mason and I got done talking it was time for the children to get to the floor with their reading books. Mrs. Mason gave me her camera and told me to take a picture of each students face only. I called them by groups to get in line for me to take their picture one by one. After I got done taking pictures of the students I got there math test from Friday and told Mrs. Mason that I was going to grade front and back of the test for her. After I got done grading the test it was already time for me to go and I told everybody that I was teaching tomorrow. All the students were excited and I told everybody bye and I will see them tomorrow.
Today when I arrived to my placement I didn’t really feel like going because I had been up all night with a toothache. I went on anyway; I signed into the office then went to the classroom and then signed in there. When I got there Mrs. Sowell wasn’t, today they would have a substitute. Mrs. Sowell was gone to a meeting for the reading teacher of the year. The students acted on their best behavior some of the students talked and acted out of manner. Everybody did their morning work; I went over to make sure they had the right answers. After went over the morning work, Mrs. Stover had their writing prompt passed out. A lot of the students wanted me to help them spell words but on a regular basis they would use dictionary if Mrs. Sowell was there. They weren’t on task like they normally would be but they weren’t bad. I allowed them to read and take AR Tests. After it was time for me to go back to school, I allowed them to go to the library to check out books and to go to the Christmas workshop, to give the substitute a break. Today was a great day at BDK, I’m ready to go back tomorrow to see Mrs. Sowell.
Today in class everything was back to normal again. They started off the day with journal writing and like normal while that was going on I worked with students and their popcorn words. After I got done with those students the morning show came on so then they sat down to watch that. While they were concentrating on that I talked to Mrs. Farnum about bringing in the Christmas gift I've made them because I want to bring them tomorrow (I'm really excited about them). Then they got to start work on their accelerated math worksheets and I walked around helping them with that. When they got done with that today Mrs. Farnum had a reindeer making activity where they traced their foot for the head and their hand twice for the antlers. After they got to cut all that out and glue them and turned them into Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. There's a counting activity that will eventually go along with these. After that got done with all that, they read and took AR tests until music class.
Today was the twentieth day in my placement. It was a very long process getting to my placement today. I witnessed a wreck and I had to call 911. But I finally got to my school. When I got there I went to the library because it was Monday, but when I got there it was locked so I went to the office and asked if Mrs. McCaskill was here and she wasn’t and there were no sub for her. So I had to go to Mrs. River’s class today. When I got in there the kids were doing their writing instead of Math today, because it was a makeup day. After that the kids finished taking the division test they didn’t finish Friday. If they finished the test they had to keep working on their writing and their houses to go over the papers. I had a blast even though I was not in Mrs. McCaskill wasn’t there.
I left school Friday after second block because I felt like I was going to die. Thank God I’m feeling much much better today! This morning was the same routine with the unpacking and lunch choice. Instead of working at something at their desk they were told to do Morning Meeting with their journals, which means they had BOGGLE and “Today’s Number.” There were a handful of kids that had work on some work that they missed or didn’t finish. Daisy finally came back after a week of the flu, but Elliott was out in her place. The librarian wasn’t there today so we didn’t have our library time. Once Morning Meeting was over I passed out Math Quickie/Daily Language and they worked on it by themselves until Mrs. Catoe got the board ready. After that it was time for them to write their spelling words for this week, which are abbreviations. Mrs. Catoe told the kids to remember that each one of the words would start with a capital letter and end with a period just like a sentence. Some of their words are Mr., Mrs., and Dr. Since we have a short week next week, Mrs. Catoe decided that this week would be a “Grinch Week”, that means everything we do will have something to do with the Grinch and the story. To start off, Mrs. Catoe read “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” at the carpet. Once the kids were sitting back in their seats, Mrs. Catoe gave them their next assignment which was to illustrate their own booklet (which I stapled) of the story. Today they were supposed to work on just the cover. They could draw whatever they wanted as long as it had something to do with the Grinch. While they were drawing and coloring, I had to leave, which was sad because I wanted to see their finished covers, but I guess I will have to wait till tomorrow to see them.
Today was test day for the students in Mr. Leininger's first block class. I got to school a little late and couldn't make it to OTT, which they do every Monday. As soon as I got situated, they came back down the hall for class. I noticed Mr. Leininger limping and asked if he was alright and he said that he got injured playing basketball over the weekend. I asked him if he needed me to teach or do anything and he told me to pass out the tests and he will be fine. I passed the tests out on the SC Facts from last week and they finished within five minutes. They picked up the scantrons and quizzes and soon began notes on the Underground Railroad. They briefly touched on it until Mr. Leininger played a movie for them about it. While they watched he stopped it and noted key things they needed to know and some fun facts about it. He asked me how I felt about Wednesday and I told him that I think I'm good and ready for it. He laid it all out for me again and I told him that I understood and would ask for help when needed. Before I knew it, class was over and it was time for me to leave.
Today was monday and i know that everyone hates mondays, especially me but today was another special monday because i was in charge of teaching again today. I decieded to go off of our wonderful teacher's, Mrs. Sutusky, advice about being louder when i talk to the childern and actually teaching them something instead of reiterating what was on the sheets i passed out. So i took the time and asked my teach would it be ok if i started the lesson out with a powerpoint and backed it with a video before i started them on work. She agreed with what i wanted to do and was really supportive in my teaching strategy. When the first came in and got settled down i started the powerpoint with nothing on their desk just their eyes on me. I wanted their full attention for the next 20 minutes i told them. I walked through the powerpoint giving as many models and examples as i could through my experience and knowledge. After i got done teaching them the raw material at hand we watched a video to back what i just taught to help the information sink into these guy minds. The video lasted for about 5 minutes then they set off with book work and after they got finished class was over and i let them go.
Today was my day to teach a lesson and get observed by Mrs. Sutusky. I was a little nervous because I didn't think I could control those kids and Mrs. Joyner was not there Friday to help me prepare so I was not sure exactly what I had to do. When I walked into the class, Mrs. Joyner forgot that I had to do a lesson today so we had to think of something at the last moment. So we decided to let me do the calender with the kids and then separate into groups and read short stories in our book. After finishing that I chose seven kids to be in my group and the rest went to Mrs. Joyner's group. You should have seen the kids while I was choosing my group they all raised their hands wanting to be in mine. After reading the two short stories we referred back to one of their old stories and read it. Right before we finished Mrs. Sutusky left and said I did great but right after she left, Mason began to argue with me because I told everyone to read the last page together. So I made him pull a strip and spend time on the hill at recess. It wasn't long after that, it was time to go and hope tomorrow is a better day.
