Today was my 24th day at Midway Elementary. When I got to Midway I signed in as I normally do and headed to Mrs. Hayes’s classroom. When I got to the class this morning there were only four kids there and one of their dads was there too. Well I signed in on the folder in the classroom and got the kids chairs off the desk. Once I did that I cut the TV on for the morning show and made sure the kids ate their breakfast. Once they ate their breakfast they came up to me for their Midway T-shirts that they would be wearing on the fieldtrip. Once everyone had their t-shirts on they used the restroom and lined up. After everyone was in line they headed towards the buses. The fieldtrip would be to a ballet and then to red robin. I really wish I would have been able to go with them. The teachers told me that really could have used my help. But I signed out at the front office and headed to North Central. Today was a very short day at my placement so I sat in the library beings Mrs. Sutusky was at an observation.
Day 24 Today is Friday and I finally did a lesson all by myself. It was so fun, and it made me realize that I want to be a teacher for sure. I think I did very well. It felt good to be up there teaching. Teaching is also harder than it looks. It’s a lot of planning. Today we read a story called “Thank You M’am”. It was such a good story and while we were reading I stopped them and we discussed what we could infer about the characters. We also filled out a star person chart that Mrs. Kahler told me about. I love the chart. It was awesome. I did an example with them first and then after we read they did their own.
Today was the twenty four day that I was in my placement. Even though today was Friday I went to Mrs. McCaskill’s classroom because I had to set everything up for my lesson on Monday. I was just like every other day in the library. I first got my computer out and pulled up the book website and got it put on the computer in the library. After that I pulled it up and read it once. Then I got out my craft stuff and started cutting everything out and made my own Reindeer for an example. Then I cut everybody else’s out and got everything put together. After that it was time to go. I had a blast and can’t wait to teach the kiddos on Monday!
Today was a fairly easy day. I began class with the warm-up like usual and told them they had a test on the facts from this week on Monday. When they put up their facts, Mr. Leininger gave them a map. He then told them to get out their notes. Today's lesson was on Dred Scott's case. He told them to get back out the map as he read about Dred Scott. It was pretty cool the way he did that, such as tracing all his steps from birth until the case. It's an interesting case to begin with because it stated that a slave was literally equipment and not a person. All other things put in place before it were basically canceled out by this case's ruling. Mr. Leininger than let the class have a court room special deciding whether or not he could actually sue. It was pretty interesting seeing the class come together on a central idea. After that they watched a movie for a little while and then class ended shortly. I stayed a little longer to tell Mr. Leininger about my powerpoint and then I headed to the main office to sign out.
Today was a catch up day for the students as well as Mrs. Ingram and me. A lot of the kids were making up quizzes, taking the quiz from my lesson and finishing up a review assignment from Monday. Our first order of business was to get the quiz knocked out so I handed all of them out and then explained it to the students because it was a little different than the quizzes Mrs. Ingram usually gives. After I explained the quiz, I worked on grading several different assignments and kept my eye out for any raised hands in case a student needed help. As the kids finished up I handed out their next assignment and went back to grading and recording. Between first and second block Mrs. Ingram showed me the activity I would be doing with the kids on Monday and also gave me some information that goes along with it to read. I’m sad that my time in my placement is almost up, but it’s been a great experience!
Today at my placement when I arrived the students where coming in the classroom. I went around and checked agenda books. Then I let a few students read to me and it was the same who usually want to read out loud. After that Mrs. Mason told everybody to come to the floor with their reading packet and book. They went over a sheet and then checked homework and they reviewed for their reading test. I took Branson, Emily, and Tristan in a room to read their test to them and they were being bad at first. I told them if they be good they can move their magnet up and get a ram buck then they were really quite. I read every question and direction twice to them and they did pretty well after that. After I got done reading the test to them we went back to the classroom. I looked at the clock and it was time for me to go and I said goodbye.
This morning I was running late, nothing new. When I walked in, the kids were working on Morning Meeting stuff back on the rug. I was supposed to do my “dry run” for Monday, but we forgot until it was too late. Since today is Friday, which means the kids will have their weekly test and quizzes. To start off with, they did their language quiz, then their math quiz. Mrs. Catoe gets the questions for those quizzes from their Math Quickie and Daily Language sheets. Once everyone was done, the kids were told to work on their Grinch book for a little. After the time was up, they picked up their math practice sheet from the empty desk at the front. Some great news is that we had 14 spelling pretest 100s yesterday. I was so proud of them for working hard all week to get that 100. David’s birthday is Sunday, so we sang “Happy Birthday” to him. It wasn’t long after that when I had to leave.
Today was a good day I would say for my students. For one it’s a Friday and everyone is ready to go home, including me, so this was a good day for them because well for one they didn’t tear the roof off or anything like that but it was also test day. Today was the day I got to see if my students learned what I tried my hardest to teach them. I taught the majority of this week lesson and take blame for any and all failures and or bad grades involved with today’s test. However for the most part things weren’t that bad. Rewinding a bit, the day started out as normal as any day could, with the arrival of the students and the unpacking of both the chairs and the class store. You see my class has a store that they sell pencils and such from so they sell every morning. After everything was unpacked and the school store was put up we got started. The teacher gave the students about fifth teen minutes to student for the exam but we needed all the time we could get. The test this week was longer than that of the others they have taken. Also there was a time limit on the test, but not the kind you would expect. The students had to at least take 15 minutes on the test or otherwise it didn’t count. After all the kids got done with the test I graded them and I am pleased to inform you that I only had a couple students fail, and I even had a student who always does bad make a 92. Over all I felt like I did a good job teaching and walked out of there with my head up knowing that.
Today in my placement, the kids had to do their normal warm up sheet and afterwards they had two different tests. One math test and the other was a spelling test. When I arrived Mrs. Joyner told me that Mrs. McCaskill needed my help in the library. So when I walked into the Library, Keri was setting up and preparing for her lesson next week. Mrs. McCaskill needed me to transform this picture of Mr. Branham kissing the pig into a JPEG photo so she could put it on the school website. It took me awhile to find out how to do it but I finally was able to and I had to show her how to. Then I went back to Mrs. Joyner's class to help her so when I got in there I offered to fix the number line that is close to the ceiling so I had to find a ladder. Once I found a ladder and fixed the number line and taped it back to the wall it was time for me to leave and get prepared for next week.
Today was the twenty-fourth day of my placement. The day started off with journal writing and Christmas is definitely on the brain with them all. We did popcorn words and are making practice, I don't think I'm going to make it to my goal of getting them all through the rest of their words but there are only two kids left (one who is on their last sheet) out of the six that hadn't when I originally started my placement. After the morning show the printer was down so Mrs. Farnum gave them their "can do" and "must do" list for the day. The "must do" lists had things like a spelling worksheet, read their little reader story to me or Mrs. Farnum, and taking AR tests. They were pretty self-sufficient with that. While they worked on this and no one was reading to me I worked on making their January journal so those wouldn't have to be made when school started back up again.
Today when I arrive to my placement I signed in, in the office and then went to the classroom and signed in. When I got to the classroom there was a substitute there. I asked where was Mrs. Sowell she told me that Mrs. Sowell had left school yesterday to go get her tooth pulled. I figured that she would go to the dentist because she was in pain yesterday. Mrs. Sowell had left the substitute lesson plans for the day. Mrs. Sowell had left for the students to do another writing prompt like they did yesterday. I went and ran off copies for them, when I got back Mrs. Stover read the instructions and the paper that Mrs. Sowell left for the sub. Today the writing topic is why should there be a longer school day. They didn’t like this writing prompt at all. One little kid said Ms. Courtney what if we don’t want school to be longer. I told him he has to pretend to want a longer one so that he could finish his work. When he got finished I read over his work and he had actually done a good job. He stayed on topic and most of his reasons were that so the students could get extra help with different subjects. They were to work on this from eight o’clock until nine o’clock with more than a paragraph. By 8:50 one of my students hadn’t written anything on his paper. Mrs. Stover got on him and he said that he had been “thinking” for the past 50 minutes. After I walked around the classroom for a while it was time for me to head back to North Central. I signed out, said bye to the sub and my students.
