Today was my 25th day at Midway Elementary. This morning was like any other day so I went to the front office and signed in. After signing in I went to Mrs. Hayes’s classroom. I helped put the chairs down, and I took the breakfast and lunch count. After I turned on the TV the kids watched the morning show and we found out that they would be having a fire drill and a code blue drill. So after the kids exercised we practiced how they would get in to the corner of the room. We explained to them why they would be doing this due to the monthly drills and the news of the shooting at that elementary school. After they practiced they went to their desk and wrote in their journals. After a little while I sorted through papers and put their writings in their journals. I then was sent to the library to tell the librarian to cut a movie on for the 2nd graders by 9:00 so they could have a relaxed day. After I came back to the class it was time to go so I signed out and headed to North Central.
I was dreading coming to school today, but my placement made my day. I taught my second lesson today and I really enjoyed interacting with all of the kids. I arrived at school a little early to make copies of all the worksheets and go over the lesson with Mrs. Ingram. After OTT the kids were coming into class and it seemed like they all had something they wanted to say. Our daily CNN Student News was about the school shooting in Connecticut and I ended up tearing up along with Mrs. Ingram and a few students. After the news Mrs. Ingram had a little discussion with the kids about the news segment and explained to them they should act mature when discussing it and not joke about it. Once that was done with I got started with my lesson and explained everything to the students and then they got started. The lesson I taught was an introduction to what they’ll be learning after Christmas break. The students said they didn’t have any question after I explained what to do but I found that as I walked around a lot of them were confused. Once I clarified things for them they were making progress and I really liked walking around to help them and talk with them. Again I’m sad my time in there is almost up but I’m going to enjoy the rest of the time I have.
Day 25 Today I taught another lesson. We starting writing about character traits from Mrs. Jones in the story “Thank You M’am “that we read together on Friday. I really enjoyed teaching this lesson although I did struggle with it a little bit. It was kind of tough getting out what I wanted to say. First we did an example of “give me five” which is a layout of their rough draft. We did the little boy Roger together in class, so that they wouldn’t be lost whenever they start working alone. Everyone did so well today and I was really proud. I didn’t think I did that well teaching today, but of course it is a Monday. The students did seem a little more rowdy than usual, but it’s a short week and Christmas is coming up, so I understand. . We didn’t get finished with the layouts for their writings yet, but they are supposed to finish them for homework, and hopefully we can start the rough drafts tomorrow. Can’t wait!
This morning started of hectic. I had to get gas so I left about 15 minutes early. When I stopped at the first gas station, there wasn’t any pumps open and I didn’t have time to wait. I decided to go to Yogi’s, since his gas is always cheaper. When I got there, I noticed that all the lights were off and there were no cars to be seen. That means I had to go to the end of town and get my gas. I was about 10 minutes late, which isn’t that bad, but I don’t like being late. I though today would be a good day to bring my kids their presents, so I had to carry two big boxes down the hall and look silly. I was really nervous when I walked in the classroom because I knew I was being observed today. I walked in and set the presents down just in time to be asked 20 questions from the kids. Since today is Monday, the kids went to the library. That gave me and Mrs. Catoe a chance to talk about some stuff. One topic we talked about was the shooting that happened Friday. We both felt the same about it, saying that we would do everything in our power to protect our kids. When the kids got back to class, the quickly sat down on the rug and I began teaching. I thing I did okay. I know I was nervous and shaking, but I feel like a natural at dealing with kids. After my “lesson”, I gave out their “ram bucks”. We are not doing Math Quickie and Daily Language this week, since it is a three day week. Before the kids could start anything else, Keri knocked on my door which signaled time to go.
Today was a horrible day. Since this is a very short week my students were absolutely terrible. They were so rowdy and just rude to the teacher. They wouldn’t shut up to save their lives. I understand that they are all excited that this week is short and all but you still have to have a bit of self-control over what they are doing. I mean it was ridiculous from the moment the bell went off to the time they stepped out of the class. It’s not that they were being deviants or anything totally obscene such as that but they just couldn’t get a grip on what was going on with them. I mean we had people talking the whole time; I’m talking full conversations going on across the room. Now I’m not a teacher and I realize I'm still a student but man that’s disrespectful. I guess you really don’t learn anything about your mannerisms until you see first-hand just how rude your being to the people around you and your teacher. If anything today has been a learning experience about not being disrespectful to my teachers and listening to them when they speak. It’s now my understanding of this concept and I hope one day my kids will learn the same lesson, or else it’s going to be a hard road ahead of them.
Today started off horrible. I came to school a little late today because my alarm didn't go off. When I got here, I soon found out that Mr. Leininger wasn't going to be here, which is a big problem. He was supposed to grade my lesson today because there probably wasn't going to be another opportunity in the future. So I rushed around school trying to find an administrator to talk to. I couldn't find anyone! So I decided to call Mrs. Sutusky and ask what I should do. She told me that I could teach the lesson or wait. At first I decided to wait until tomorrow and go get a movie from the library. As soon as I got back to class though, Dr. Richardson was there waiting for me as I walked in, asking me if he could grade my lesson, which I said yes. So I began my lesson on the election of 1860. It was an overall pretty good lesson. I was pretty nervous since Mr. Leininger wasn't there to give any help, but I did a great job. Once I finished, I showed them a video to top off my lesson. The students told me that I was a great teacher which really made me happy. I showed them a Civil War video until the end of class. I actually enjoyed this day in class even though it started off rough. Hopefully tomorrow will be as good as today.
Today was my twenty fifth day in my placement. I was a normal Monday at MTP. I walked in the library ready to teach. I got in there and got my computer ready to hook up on the Smart board. When I got in there Mrs. McCaskill handed me a gift, it was a necklace that was beautiful. I loved it and I gave her a piece of cake that I had made the day before. Then the kids were at the door and ready to learn. When the kids got in there I read them the book, and it was so nerve racking talking in front of them but I think I did okay. Then it was time to do the craft. The kids did so amazing today. They were so good; they listened, and did everything so perfect. I loved it so much, and I can’t wait to do it again.
Today when I walked into my placement, I greeted the children and Mrs. Joyner hugged all of them since the shooting Friday. When the kids were working on their morning sheets, Mrs. Joyner caught me off guard by asking me if I was ready to teach today. So I told her yes that I'll teach today for my lesson evaluation by her. So I started with the Math fun on the Smart Board and when I got to a slide that asked what day it was, I went over the calender with the kids like the previous time when Mrs. Sutusky observed me. I went through many different slides and let the kids come up to the board to write the answer. They seemed to really enjoy the lesson and was having lots of fun. I allowed them to recommend some fun slides to do since I have never done it. After finishing my lesson Mrs. Joyner handed out a picture to color while we went over my lesson evaluation. Overall she said I did really great, which I was surprised.
The excitement was already in the air today when the kids got to class because they knew they'd be getting out for Christmas this week. You could tell the teachers and staff were on higher alert today though because of what happened last Friday. They worked on journals as normal and most of them were writing about Christmas. I did popcorn words with the few kids left that needed to work on them then it was morning show time. The printer was finally starting to work right again so I ran errands while they did smart board math instead of accelerated math. After they were done with that they got to make foam ornaments that were either a polar bear, penguin, or snowman. After they decorated them Mrs. Farnum took their picture to go in it, and I tied string. It was music day today and they were all excited about their Christmas concert that would be happening tonight, I can't wait to watch them.
Today when I got to my placement I signed in, in the office and then in the classroom. When I got to the classroom Mrs. Sowell was sitting at our table I told her that I missed her, she laughed. Mrs. Sowell and I went over the evaluation papers that I had to turn in, since they were taking MAPs testing the week that I was supposed to be teaching my lesson I didn’t get to teach. She evaluated me on the second day that I was doing my lesson for the puppet script. Today the students didn’t have any morning work to do. The whole time that I was there they were just reading and taking AR test. Since today is a short week, the first hour of class is a time where students would have the opportunity to meet reading goals that they haven’t met last week. While they were taking AR Tests Mrs. Sowell sent me on a copier spree I made tons of copies for her. When I finally got a chance to sit down it was time for me to head back to North Central to begin my day there.
