Today is my 22nd day at Midway Elementary School. Dealing with the hyper 2nd graders this morning was strangely easier than it usually has been. The students look at me like I’m the adult when I ask them to do something. Today when I got to Midway I signed in as I normally do and I headed to Mrs. Hayes’s classroom. Today was not really a busy day so it was pretty easy getting through the class. I took the breakfast and lunch count like I normally do and then turned the TV to channel two for the exercise. Once the kids did their exercises they got out their journals and had to write a story. While they were writing I graded a set of math papers and entered a lot of grades into the grade book for Mrs. Hayes. I didn’t finish all the papers so I brought some of them with me so I could have them graded for tomorrow. I have been brainstorming and I told Mrs. Hayes that I would be getting the kids a little treat for next week before Christmas break. I didn’t tell Mrs. Hayes that I’m going to get her something because I know she would tell me not to. Mrs. Hayes went over the observation papers with me that she filled out on my lesson from yesterday. Over all I did pretty good I just need to work on being louder and having a better hook. After a little while it was already time to leave so I signed out and headed to North Central.
Today when I arrived to my placement I signed in as I usually would. I saw some of my students in the cafeteria as I was walking to my classroom; they ran up to me and greeted me with a hug. I proceeded to the classroom, I signed in and told Mrs. Sowell good morning. She was sitting by the computer still working on candy for the teachers. It was cute the way that she had the candy in the shape of a sled. The students were reading and some were on the computers taking AR tests. I looked on the table that we normally sit at and asked her where their morning work was because I didn’t see it on their desks or on the table. She told me to go the teachers’ lounge and make copies for the fourth and fifth grade. When I got back to the classroom I was getting ready to make my answer key when I noticed that they had already done this worksheet. I went back to the teachers’ lounge to make new copies. I went back to the classroom and passed the morning work out to my students. Today they got done pretty quick I think they rushed through it because they were ready to go to the Christmas Store in the library. I slowly went over their morning work with them and those who got their answers incorrect I asked other student who got theirs correct could they explain why they picked their answer. Students who had money to go to the store I allowed them to go three or four at a time so that the rest of them could go. I left the classroom a little early so that I could go to the store to see if it was anything worth buying, after I left the store I signed out and headed to my car so that I could go to school.
Day 22 Today was a good day we did a warm-up on what we remember from kindergarten and then after that we started using our inference skills and we read “Charles”. It’s a really good story and has a very tricky ending. While we were reading I was surprised to see that the students were really catching on. It made me happy to see that. I love having discussions in class. They are learning inference skills, and tomorrow we will continue working on the story “Charles” and I can’t wait to see their reactions to the ending, because it’s much unexpected.
Today when I arrived at my placement I went around and checked to see who had their agenda book sign. After that we ran out of ram bucks and I went to each of the student’s pockets and I told Mrs. Mason that I was going to count each student and add them up and put it on their index card. I counted each student ram bucks and added them up to their pervious balance. One student almost had 200 ram bucks. The children were excited to see how many ram bucks they had. After I got done with counting the ram bucks I let some students read to me. After they got done reading they took an AR test and I helped them with the words that they need help with. Then the students went to the floor with their reading book and opened it to the story for this week. The students were upset because I wasn’t teaching and Mrs. Mason gave me her computer and told me to upload the pictures I took yesterday on the camera. There were a few students that didn’t get their picture taken yesterday. So I took the students that didn’t get their picture taken yesterday and took their picture. After that I went around the room looking to see who was following along with Mrs. Mason and there were a few students that were doing great and I told Mrs. Mason and they got to get a ram buck. After that it was time for them to go to the library and then it was time for me to go. I told everybody bye and that I will see them tomorrow.
Today is Wednesday and it is my twenty second day being in my placement. I was in the Library with Mrs. McCaskill today. It wasn’t a normal day today. When I walked in the library I started talking about my lesson for Monday. I had to have standards for it so I asked Mrs. McCaskill if she had any, which she did. I copied the standards onto my computer and talked to her about the lesson. Then third grade came in and we had the lesson and they worked on a worksheet. It was fun and I can’t wait for tomorrow!
Today was kind of a weird day in my class. I didnt really do a whole lot until Mrs. Sutusky came in so i had to teach then, but other than that it was pretty much smooth sailing. We went over the lesson of what i did monday which was the three types of heat transfer. Radiation, Convection and Conduction, now this was the lesson today so i let the students know all about them. I told them that Radiation is a special type of heat transfer because it doesnt reqire any type of medium to transfer heat but instead uses radiation waves to emmit heat in not one direction but all directions. Then i told them how Convection is the type of heat transfer where hot currents rise and cooler currents go down to be heated up again. I let them know that this happens when you boil water and in the weather as well as all sorts of other stuff. I also let them know that Conduction is when heat is transfered through touch which i think is a pretty easy concept to understand. We watched a video before hand to back everything up i teached monday and then i reiterated it when i was being obsereved. I think over all it was a descent day.
The routine went back to normal today. Journals were the first thing as usual. I did popcorn words this morning and now another student is completely done with his! There's only a couple left to finish and I hope they do before I'm done with teacher cadet. Today is Wednesday so we had morning movement after the morning show where they exercise in class, and its also PE day. After all that they did accelerated math like normal, a good bit of them are starting to move up objectives by the problems they're starting to get now. They read and took AR tests after that. When it was time for me to leave they had a surprise for me, they'd all written me notes and some had drawn pictures to give me. It made my day, and I'll always keep those.
Today the students were taking a quiz with questions from the review games we have been playing. I passed out all their folders, quizzes and candy and then made my way to the library with Dre. Dre broke his arm last night and wasn’t able to write so I spent most of my time with him in the library scribing for him. I was looking forward to working one on one with the student because he sometimes causes trouble and I thought for sure he wouldn’t get in trouble if I was there helping him. When we began the test however, I became very disappointed because he didn’t know any of the answers. I know for a fact this kid is very smart, and he has a lot of potential, but he doesn’t put forth any effort. He’s more worried about his reputation and what other kids think of him than his school work which upset me because I knew if he had prepared himself, he would have aced the test. Once we got back to the class Mrs. Ingram and I looked over my lesson plans and then I headed back to the high school. Tomorrow I teach my lesson and I’m very excited!
Today was a very important day for me being a teacher cadet as today was my placement date. I was so nervous and excited at the same time. So many things were going through my mind. I arrived at my placement a little early because Mr. Leininger forgot again to send me the SC Facts for the warm-up. He told me what I needed to know and tell them for them to remember or fully understand it. Once we finished that the class eventually started making their way down the hall and in the room. Mrs. Sutusky finally came in and I gave her a desk to sit in and gave her a worksheet that I would be going over eventually. I began class doing the warm-up like usual. I really enjoyed doing the warm-up today and I think its my best one so far. Once they finished copying them down I told them to get ready to copy notes. I soon began my lesson on the Kansas Nebraska Act. I started off asking about the Missouri Compromise since they both connected. I initially tried to make the lesson last about 15 minutes but it ended up being 10. I managed to cover some time in the next thing which was the worksheet. I asked them what they thought it was and then I told and wrote down the answer for them. Once we finished this I showed them a video about the Kansas Nebraska Act and Bleeding Kansas. To make sure they paid attention I asked questions after it was over. Once I did that I was completely done with my lesson. They applauded me and I walked back to my desk. Mr. Leininger told me I did a good job and walked up there and highlighted over a few things with them and talked a little more thoroughly than I did. They watched a movie until the end of class about a slave plantation during the 1860's. After that I headed back to the high school.
Just like yesterday, the kids had something to work on at their desk. They could either color the picture or read quietly or draw. Mrs. Catoe told me that when Daisy got there, she wanted me to take her out to the hallway and read her “Officer Buckle” so she could make up her test. While we were standing out in the hall, one of Mrs. Joyner’s kids was having a “problem” and Mr. Bosco was called to handle it. Mrs. Catoe has had Christmas music playing for about a week now and the kids were singing along with it which is extremely cute because they only know a few words. Mrs. Catoe got me to staple the kid’s math test together while I was waiting on Daisy to get there. The Silver Spurs Mail Delivery service had dropped of a mail box and the kids got a chance to write a letter to Santa, they were so excited to put it in the mailbox outside. Since we missed our library time the other day, we will have to go tomorrow. We did out Morning Meeting and then started our Math Quickie/Daily Language. After we finished with all of that, the kids got started on their spelling practice, which is Rainbow Roll and Write today. When spelling practice was over they had to finish reading the Grinch and illustrate the rest of the pages. With about 15 minutes to spare, Daisy came in and I took her out in the hall and read to her. We barely got finished before it was time for me to leave.
Today went back to the normal routine in my placement and we did our normal warm up sheet. All the people who came to the event last night and behaved, I gave them two ram bucks. Since tomorrow was the day that the students were going to the store we tried our best to give them as many ram bucks as possible. After finishing the warm up, Mrs. Joyner brought all the kids to the rug in front of her while I worked on her MAP scores binder. The kids have a chain and every time they all behave very well they are able to add a link to it. Once the link touches the bottom of the board the students receive a prize. Well this times prize was 25 extra minutes of computer lab to play games. She was telling the students about that while I wrote down the newest MAP scores for each student. When I finished doing that it was time for me to leave and get prepared for tomorrow.
