Today is Tuesday December 4, 2012 and only the 16th day I have been at Midway. When I got to Midway today I signed in as usual and headed straight to the classroom. Today the students had cinnamon rolls and sausage or cereal for breakfast. I checked their names off if they got breakfast and then took the lunch count. Once I did the lunch count the kids worked on their writing assignment. Not sure what was going on with the kids today but they were louder and disobedient more than usual. I had to tell several of them to sit down and do their work more than once. Today I had to make name labels to go on the side of binders for the kids once I did that I had to begin my group lesson. Today instead of picking tables I decided to pick individuals who were doing their work. My first group was Stephany, Zyona, Collin, Leanna, and Taylor. After they got into their little circle they didn’t really even need my help. They worked through the problems while I was sitting with them and I made sure each one understood everything. After about 30 minutes I chose five more kids. This time I chose Zoey, Dylan, Donovan, Jaylen, and Celia. They needed more help understanding how to work the game but after I explained they took off on their own. It was a very productive day I can’t wait to teach them my lesson for Mrs. Hayes on the 11th and Mrs. Sutusky on the 18th.
Today is my 16th day at Baron DeKalb Elementary. Today I signed in as I normally would in the office, then in Mrs. Sowell’s classroom. The kids were working on their morning work as they usually would. Mrs. Sowell was sitting at the computer working on reading and writing standards. As soon as I greeted everyone I immediately started to finish my lesson for tomorrow. I went to the teacher lounge and ran off copies that the students will have to do after we read “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.” After I got back to the classroom Mrs. Sowell and I talked about groups, she told me that she picks their groups but I could let them pick if I wanted to. By her smile and the way she said it in knew that, that wouldn’t be a good idea. I couldn’t make the groups by myself because I knew I would place all the talkers and nonworkers in a group together, and I put all of the friends in one group. To avoid all of this I went online and found a website that randomly place them in groups for you. After getting everything situated for my lesson, I went around the room looking over the kids writing to make sure that everything was grammatically correct and made sense. Mrs. Sowell soon told them that they were about to move on because they would be getting called to take MAPs testing soon. We went over their morning work as a class; the majority of them got all of them correct. Mrs. Sowell had another packet passed out this would be their classwork until they got called for MAP Testing. They would have another worksheet like that for homework that I will check sometime tomorrow.
Day 16 Today when I got to the middle school I signed in the front office as usual and then headed to Mrs. Kahler’s class. On my way there all of the eighth graders were making their way there as well. In the morning all of the students are busy going to their lockers and getting their materials for class. When they all go in the class room the news show came on, like usual. After that Mrs. Kahler gave back rough drafts of everyone’s eye papers, and then she discussed what they can do better, and how to really show not tell about the eye description. After that we all went into the computer lab and they started on their final drafts. I walked around and tried to help the students with questions. They all needed help coming up with a hyperbole, simile, or personification. Today I really got some one on one time with the students, and I was excited about that. They are all so special and sweet. I’m looking forward to another day tomorrow.
Today in my placement I was observed by my teacher cadet teacher. I had to teach all by m self while she watched and graded me on my skills with the kids. I stared the class off with their morning work and made sure they knew what they were doing. When the kids were done we had our group time and in my group I had to show the kids how to paint their words on paper. When we were done we went to circle time were they all sat on the rug while I filled out the calendar and then we did a math problem to get the kids thinking. We got to the number section and I called on kids to tell I how to count and then we showed the kids a story then we went back to group time. I can not wait intill tomorrow to spend more time with my kids.
Today is day sixteen of my placement. It was a normal day at Mount Pisgah Elementary School. I started off the long hallway toward the fifth grade classroom; because it was Tuesday I was in Mrs. River’s class. We started today off just like every other day. I got in there and signed in with Mrs. River’s and walked around while the kids did their warm-ups. While they did the warm-up Mrs. River’s checked their homework. After they finished up their warm-ups Mrs. Rivers went over their warm-ups and their homework. After that Mrs. River’s handed a worksheet out. It was about problem solving. They did the first side of the sheet together as a class and after that she had them break into groups of two and work on the other side. I walked around to see if the kids needed help. Some did and some didn’t. It was a blast. Loved it and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow has in store.
I didn't get to do the warm-up today because Mr. Leininger forgot to send me the facts. He told me that I got off easy today. The class did the warmup and soon picked up on the notes from yesterday. They continued on with the Antebellum period going more in depth. They continued to really focus on the idea of Manifest Destiny and spent a few minutes describing a picture that had an angel flying over new land. They watched a short video during notes. Mr. Leininger had to stop the video a couple times to tell a few of the students to be quiet and pay attention to the video but other than that they paid attention. After that class was dismissed. I stayed longer to talk about what I would have to be doing tomorrow and he told me he would have a sheet printed out for me and the substitute. He said that it was fairly easy and they would watch a movie for the remainder of class after they finished their work. I can't wait for tomorrow to begin.
I spent most of my time today grading the quizzes that I gave yesterday. First I had to go through all five classes and mark the wrong answers. After that I went back and calculated the grade the student earned and then recorded it in Mrs. Ingram’s paper grade book. Mrs. Ingram wanted to show me how to enter the grades into Power Schools, but we ran out of time. While classes were switching Mrs. Ingram and I looked over the grades and she explained to me some of her concerns. Overall the grades were pretty good because she made the quiz a lot easier than what they were supposed to be studying, but in each class there were a few bad grades. Something that really hurt to hear was that a handful of girls are purposely failing their quizzes to try and impress a boy by playing the “bad girl” part. I didn’t realize that kids this young were already so concerned about relationships, but I don’t think they need to be. Other than that handful who “purposely” failed, I think the other students who failed just did not prepare for the quiz. I hope that when I teach my lessons, I am able to reach out to all of the kids.
I arrived at my placement about 7:25 and I talked to Mrs. Mason for a little bit until the children started to come in the classroom. The students unpacked and then I went around checking agenda books to see if they are signed. After that the children got out there AR books and started to read. I called on a few students to take turns reading to me. After the students read the book they took a test on the books. After AR time the students got there reading books and went to the floor. Mrs. Mason went over the vocabulary and the new story for this week. After the story they have to work in which station they get put in. There were three different stations and one was spelling words, reading packet, and spelling city on the computer. After this it was time for me to leave so I went and told everybody bye and I left.
Today was an easy day in my placement. I arrived at the normal time and walked in to the classroom. The kids were unpacking and choosing what they wanted for lunch. Instead of a warm up this morning the students had to do their language sheet because they had MAP testing at eight. I went into the computer lab with the kids and helped Mr. Boscoe and Mrs. Joyner with the computers when the kids could not hear the lady talking. Also when the students finished their test, they had to raise their hand and one of us had to come by and print out their results. Once all of the students finished we went back to class and they had to finish coloring their picture they had from the morning. It wasn't long after we arrived back in the room that it was time for me to leave. So today overall was pretty simple and I was not able to interact with them as I usually do.
I noticed that the classroom was extremely hot this morning but I didn’t say anything. I’m officially out on “Pencil Duty” and I can only sharpen pencils before the day starts. Carter wasn’t feeling too good this morning; he even went to the restroom and threw up a couple times. Yesterday, Michael went home sick and he didn’t come today. In place of Morning Meeting, the kids painted three Popsicle stick to make a tree ornament for our classroom tree. As usual, the kids got messy. I somehow got painted in the process of helping them wash their hands. Kinsley made my day when she asked me to get the paint off of her nose; I still don’t know how she got it there. This week is Kinsley’s week to be the “Star Student” so she did some sharing before we did anything else. Once she was done with her sharing, they started on Math Quickie/Daily Language, and since Daisy is still out, I did hers. After that they did spelling practice with “Rainbow Writing.” Mrs. Catoe called time and the kids were told to get out their reading books so we could start “Officer Buckle and Gloria”, which is about safety tips. I left before they were done with the story.
